By the Numbers

  • The Gators improve to 4-1 and are off to the program's best start since 2013. The Mavericks finished the tournament at 2-3.
  • SF State recorded a season-high nine hits with those hits coming from seven different players. Four of those hits were for extra bases.
  • Teya Vincent, serving as the designated player on Sunday, went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, and was hit by a pitch.
  • Daniella Guerrera also went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
  • A night after striking out a season-high 15 times, SF State did not strike out.
  • Through four games, Kai DeLeon leads the team with a .357 batting average. DeLeon and Kaitlyn Maddux, who won a pair of complete games, were named to the Concordia Kickoff Classic All-Tournament Team.

How They Scored

  • A two-out Nilson single sparked a Gators run in the first. She stole second, then moved up 60 feet on Vincent's single to right field. Vincent executed a steal attempt and drew the run down, which allowed Nilson to score before Vincent was tagged.
  • Guerrera led off the second with an infield single and moved all the way to third when Phoebe Schultz's ball into right center glanced off the right fielder's glove. Gonzalez drove them both home with a double to left field that made it 3-0.
  • DeLeon laid down a bunt single to begin the third and Gonzales followed with a double to left. Nilson grounded out but plated DeLeon, and Gonzales took third on the play. The Mavericks tried to throw her out at third but the ball skipped away, which allowed Gonzales to score and make it 5-0. Vincent doubled to left center, stole third, and scored when Guerrera legged out an infield single.
  • The Mavericks got on the board in the fourth. Pruitt doubled to left, moved up on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a failed pickoff by Gonzales. A sac fly brought the Gators lead down to 6-2. Schultz launched the Gators first homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth for what would turn out to be the game-winning run.
  • CMU continued to eat into the lead. The Mavericks capitalized on a couple of wild pitches and a throwing error for two more runs in the fifth and cut the lead to one in the sixth with back-to-back RBI doubles from Myah Arrieta and Sarah Jorissen. CMU got the tying run to second in the sixth but Brooklyn Heffernan came in and got a groundout. The Mavericks got the winning run to the plate in the seventh but Heffernan got Ava Fugate swinging to end the game.

In The Circle

  • Taylor Kelly (1-0), Madeline Eshbach, and Heffernan allowed a season-high 10 hits to the Mavericks but they worked out of trouble as well. Kelly stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings as SF State built its 6-0 lead. Kelly went four and a third innings while Eshbach and Heffernan both went one and a third innings.
  • Heffernan picked up her first career save.
  • Sarah Jorissen (1-1) was pulled after allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits.
  • Hannah Sattler entered for an inning and two thirds of relief and gave up three more runs on four hits.
  • Kennedy Vis tossed the final three innings and gave up the Schultz home run.
