SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State softball team split its makeup doubleheader versus Cal State East Bay. The Gators fell 3-2 in eight innings but bounced back to take the nightcap 2-1 to split the season series.
- SF State improves to 24-18 on the season and 12-14 in conference action. The Pioneers fall to 23-28 overall and 12-20 in CCAA play.
- The 24 wins are tied with the 2018 squad for the tenth most in program history.
- The Gators are now 13-6 in one-run games this season and to 10-8 at home.
- SF State remains in sixth place by one game in front of both Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt. Those two teams just met, with Humboldt taking three of four. The Gators and Wildcats meet next weekend, April 21-22, in Chico.
- Game two took just 1:26 to play, the team's shortest seven-inning affair of the season. That was 10 minutes shorter than their previous fastest game, which was also versus Cal State East Bay.
- Despite splitting on the day, the Gators outhit the Pioneers in both games, 8-7 and 7-6.
- Kai DeLeon had two hits in each game and leads the team with a .364 batting average. Daniella Guerrera and Teya Vincent also had two-hit games in game one.
- With a hit in game one, catcher Liana Gonzalez brought her hit streak to eight before having her streak snapped in game two.
- Cam Cramer's single up the middle in the second inning of game two was her first career hit.
Game 1
- The Gators struck first. In a day that saw a lot of action down the left field line, DeLeon did just that to bring home Gonzalez in the third for an early lead.
- CSUEB got the run right back and took the lead in the fourth though. A leadoff walk proved costly. After the walk and a couple of singles loaded the bases, Pioneers leadoff batter Annelise Garcia sent a two-out single to left center, which put the Pioneers up 2-1.
- With the bases loaded in the sixth, Vincent brought home a run on a fielder's choice that didn't result in an out. However, the Gators left the bases loaded.
- Another leadoff walk proved costly in the eighth inning. The Pioneers' number nine batter, Sydney Littles, delivered a two-out single down the left field line for the go-ahead run. The Gators got the winning run to the plate after Guerrera singled but Vincent struck out and Kira Nilson grounded out.
- Brooklyn Heffernan (9-10) allowed seven hits over eight innings but four walks proved costly. She struck out four.
- Anamaria Beard (13-13) needed just 97 pitches in the win for the Pioneers. She scattered eight hits over eight innings. She walked one and struck out a pair.
Game 2
- The Gators scored both of their runs without the help of an RBI. Guerrera came home on a wild pitch in the first. In the third, Gonzales and DeLeon executed a successful double steal that allowed DeLeon to slide in safely.
- The Pioneers got a run back in the fourth on Cynthia Carrillo's sacrifice fly.
- Kaitlyn Maddux (13-6) tossed 91 pitches and allowed just one earned run for the third consecutive game. She scattered six hits, walked two, and struck out two.
- Beard toed the rubber again for game two and threw just 51 pitches but took the tough-luck loss. She gave up one earned run, didn't issue a walk, and had one strikeout.
The Gators head to Chico State for a crucial series on Friday and Saturday, April 21-22. The doubleheader will be broadcast on the
