By the Numbers

  • The Gators improve to 24-15 overall and 17-14 in CCAA action, just eight percentage points behind third-place Cal Poly Pomona in the standings. The Wildcats fall to 15-18 overall and are in eighth place in the CCAA at 9-14.
  • SF State homered four times, led by Gavin Haimovitz, who had one in each game. Matt Sugden and Justin Clark also went deep in game one.
  • Nick Upstill tied the career mark for triples with 11 with Ivory Jones (1995) and Phil Kernan (1992-95) with a triple in the eighth inning of game one. Upstill also moved into second in a single season with his eighth of the season. He passes Tony Saffo's 1975 season and is chasing the 11 triple baggers recorded by Jones in 1995. As a team, the Gators lead the CCAA with 23 triples.
  • Clark went 4-for-4 in game one and leads the team with a .389 batting average, which is second in the CCAA behind Cal State Monterey Bay's Nico Hartojo (.414). Clark was also hit by a pitch. The Gators have been beaned a league-leading 54 times.
  • The Gators lead the CCAA in batting with a .323 team average and .407 on-base percentage.
  • SF State is currently ranked No. 7 in the Week 10 NCBWA West Region Poll.
GAME ONE

How It Happened

  • Haimovitz set the tone early with a two-out homer to left field.
  • The Wildcats tied the game quickly in the top of the third. Iparraguirre singled to lead off the inning and later came around to score uncontested on a fielder's choice.
  • SF State didn't waste any time taking the lead right back in the bottom of the third. After two quick outs, Clark doubled to right center and Kody Gardner scored him with a single back up the middle.
  • The Gators couldn't get the shutdown inning they needed though and the Wildcats hung a crooked number with a three-run fourth. The Gators appeared out of the inning when Kyle Dobson struck out but a dropped third strike allowed him to extend the inning. Iparraguirre recorded another single and leadoff batter Jeffrey Ray singled them both home. That chased Gators starter Mickey Radanovich and Andrew Crane sent the first pitch from reliever Justice Naraghi to left center and a 4-2 Wildcats lead.
  • Sugden's solo shot to left center cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth.
  • After a 1-2-3 Wildcats fifth, the Gators capitalized with a crooked inning of their own. Upstill and Clark singled, which prompted a Wildcats pitching change. Michael Cunningham drew a one-out walk and Sugden sent a two-run single down the left field line. Then, Antonio Nanez capped off the inning with a two-run single up the middle that put the Gators in front, 7-4.
  • In the eighth, Upstill recorded his record-tying triple, which prompted another Wildcats pitching change. Clark greeted Trent Lopez with a two-run homer to left center.

  • Naraghi (3-2) picked up the win in two and a third innings of relief. He allowed just one hit.
  • Andrew Silva struck out two and allowed one hit in two innings of relief.
  • Gary Grosjean worked the ninth inning and struck out a pair.
  • The Wildcats used six arms in game one. Tyce Ochs took a no-decision after allowing a pair of runs in three innings. Marco Ibarra (0-5) took the loss after surrendering three runs in an inning of work.
GAME TWO

How It Happened

  • The Gators loaded the bases in the third. Sammy Gonzales hit into a double play but that allowed Haimovitz to score. Daniel Santos followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
  • Chico State got a run back in the top of the fourth with Ernie Arambula's two-out RBI single but the inning ended when Arambula was picked off.
  • Haimovitz added a crucial insurance run in the fifth with a leadoff homer to center that extended the Gators' lead to 3-1.
  • The Wildcats cut the lead to one again in the seventh and got the go-ahead run to the plate. Jacob Jablonski and Cameron Mahaffy roped back-to-back doubles to make it 3-2 but Nathan Shinn got a strikeout and fly ball to center to end it.

  • Tyler Franks (3-1) picked up the win in the seven-inning affair with four innings of four-hit, one-run ball. He walked a pair and struck out three.
  • Ethan Remmers faced three batters, Mario Vargas struck out three in an inning and two thirds of work. Shinn worked the seventh inning and allowed a run but picked up his first save.
  • Chico State used five pitchers in game two. Eric Hill pitched a perfect first inning for the Wildcats and gave way to Justin Tamelier (2-2), who was charged with two unearned runs and took the loss. Ethan Lay also gave up a run.
