By the Numbers

  • The Gators fall to 26-18 overall and 19-17 in CCAA action while the Broncos sit at 26-19 and 18-17 in the conference. The Gators still sit in third, tied with Cal State East Bay. The Broncos sit in fifth with no more games in the regular season left on the schedule.
  • Michael Cunningham hit his second home run of the weekend and seventh of the season, tying AJ Schrader with the most homers on the team.
  • Nick Upstill went 4-for-5 on the day, bringing his batting average up to .388 and second best in the conference.
  • Bronco homers proved to be costly for the Gators as Pomona scored four of their six runs off homers.

How It Happened

The Broncos opened up the game with a pair of hits in the first leading to a run off an RBI single. They extended the lead to 2-0 in the second off a sac fly. Cunningham cut the deficit in half with a solo homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the second. The Broncos responded with a solo shot of their own in the top of the third. The Gators looked for a clean inning in the fourth with two outs and a pair of runners on, but a homer from Trent MacKinney ended that plan and the Broncos took a 6-1 lead in the fourth.

Cunningham hit a ground rule double to center and advanced to third off a balk in the bottom of the sixth. He advanced home on the next at bat thanks to an error by the second basemen. The Gators put their rally caps on in the seventh and plated three runs at home. Matt Sugden hit an RBI single in shallow infield to allow Upstill to score and Justin Clark to advance to second. Back-to-back hit by pitches allowed a second run to score. Sammy Gonzales hit a two-out single up the middle to plate the Gators third run and make it a one-run game.

Down 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Cunningham was pegged by a pitch for the second time that day and took his free base. Cole Thompson came in to pinch run but was picked off for the final out.

On the Mound

  • Jordyn Eglite (2-3) made his return to the mound for the first time since April 2. He gave up six hits, five earned runs and tossed two strikeouts, putting him seven away from tying the all-time program record. Eglite's day was done after inducing a fly ball for the first out in the top of the fifth, drawing a round of applause from the crowd.
  • Tyler Franks continued his strong second-half of the season, going 3.2 scoreless innings and matching his season high of six strikeouts while only giving up three hits.
  • Mario Vargas pitched the final inning, tossing a strikeout out and giving up a hit.
  • Matt Orozco picked up the win in relief while Eric Romo earned his fourth save of the season.
