SEASIDE, Calif. — The San Francisco State softball team split its series at Cal State Monterey Bay with another doubleheader split on Saturday. The Gators opened with a forgettable 11-0 loss in game one, then hung on to win the series finale 5-4.
- SF State has won seven of its last ten games. The Gators improve to 17-16 on the season and 6-12 in conference action. CSUMB moves to 23-17 overall and are tied for third place in the CCAA at 14-10.
- Kai DeLeon thwarted the no-hitter bid with her two-out single in the fifth, the Gators' lone hit in game one. She also had two hits in game two, bringing her average to .384, which continues to lead the team and is third in the CCAA.
- SF State bounced back in the series finale and outhit the Otters 8-7. Seven different Gators recorded a hit.
- Kaitlyn Maddux lowered her ERA to 2.19 in 96 innings.
Game 1
- The Otters hung a four-spot on the board in the first inning and a six-inning third spelled disaster. One more run in the fourth put the game well out of reach.
- Brooklyn Heffernan (6-9) had her shortest start of the season. She lasted two and a third innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. She struck out three.
- Madeline Eshbach surrendered four runs, three earned, in relief.
- Cassie Gasper (14-6) was more dominant than she was on Friday with her CCAA-leading sixth shutout of the season. The Otters pitcher struck out five and walked four in a one-hitter. Gasper now sports a 1.12 ERA, which is second in the CCAA.
Game 2
- SF State regrouped in game two with a five-run first inning that set the tone for the rest of the game. DeLeon sent the first pitch of the game into center field for a single. The Gators loaded the bases with a Teya Vincent walk and Kira Nilson two-out single, then Marissa Jordan singled home a pair. Liana Gonzalez doubled the lead when she sent a 2-2 pitch into right field for a two-run double. Hailey Weddington topped off the rally with an RBI single down the left field line.
- Otters left fielder Haylee Clay tried her best to keep her team in the game. She had two hits on the day, including a three-run double to right center that cut the Gators lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
- With two outs in the sixth, Otters designated player Lauren Bullis singled home an unearned run in the sixth that cut the lead to 5-4.
- SF State looked to add insurance but stranded a pair in the seventh. The Otters went in order in the bottom of the seventh.
- Maddux (10-5) picked up another win in another complete game, her 11th, which is fourth among CCAA pitchers. Maddux was charged with four runs, three earned, on seven hits. She walked one and struck out one.
- Stetler (8-11) also went the distance again but wasn't as sharp as she was on Friday. The Otters starter gave up five runs on eight hits. She walked a pair and struck out four.
The Gators are right back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 11 with a noon doubleheader versus Cal State East Bay. That doubleheader is part of a makeup for the series rained out earlier this season. The games will be broadcast on the
