SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State Department of Athletics gathered together on Monday evening at the Student Life Events Center for the 2022-23 Student-Athlete Awards Banquet.

Kimberly DeBoer (volleyball) discussed all of the emotions tied to the season. Director of Athletics Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins and President Lynn Mahoney both addressed the audience as well. Sheared returned to the stage to recognize the student-athletes who earned national, regional, and conference honors; then welcomed the program's head coaches to the stage to unveil their team awards.
In addition to the
team awards presented per team and individual student-athletes honored, baseball was named men's team of the year after going 27-22 and earning a regional ranking while track & field earned the honor on the women's side. Dr. Jamillah Moore, vice president for student affairs & enrollment management, congratulated the student-athletes and helped welcome graduating student-athletes to the stage, where they were presented with student-athlete sashes to be worn at commencement, which will take place at Oracle Park on Friday, May 26.
Volleyball player Tamiya Wilson was named CCAA Freshman of the Year, made the CCAA All-First Team, and earned D2CCA Second Team West Region honors. She earned CCAA Offensive Player of the Week Honors while starting in all 25 matches. At the end of the regular season, Wilson also le led the conference in kills per set.
Wrestler Andre Dargani made an instant impact to the Gators lineup in 2022-23. Originally planning to redshirt, an injury at his position quickly found him in the starting lineup. Prior to being activated, he went 4-4 in a pair of unattached tournament appearances. He went on to record 10 wins and was also named to the NWCA Division II Scholar All-America Team.
Track & field athlete Mattie Cecilio was named the female Newcomer of the Year. She earned All-West Region Honors in Indoor Track & Field after jumping a provisional mark of 11.86m in her final indoor meet of the season. She took second in the Triple Jump and eighth in the long jump at the CCAA Championships. In the final weekend of the regular outdoor season, she jumped a new personal best of 12.27m, second best in school history and the 20th best mark in NCAA Division II this season.
On the men's side, basketball player Jonah Roth made an instant impact for the Gators. The All-CCAA Honorable Mention appeared in 25 games with 23 starts and averaged 10.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in 28 minutes per game. He scored 10 or more points 11 times and had a pair of 20-point-plus performances. He scored a career-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting versus Holy Names and made four three-pointers in a three-point road win at Cal State Dominguez Hills. He also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the team's home-opening win over Regis.

CCAA Hal Charnofsky Award |
The CCAA Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award recognizes CCAA student- athletes who had distinguished themselves in the classroom and their sport.
This year's female honoree was volleyball player Kimberly DeBoer. She was the program's first CCAA Setter of the Year Honoree. An All-CCAA First Team selection and two-time CCAA Setter of the Week, this athlete had 1,006 assists on the season and led the conference in assists per set. The Kinesiology major earned CSC Academic All-District and boasts a 3.87 GPA. Off of the court, she serves as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and along with the Executive SAAC Council helped spearhead a Mental Wellness Campaign.
This year's male honoree was men's basketball player Jalen Flanagan, who began his SF State career as a redshirt in 2018-19. After coming off the bench for 13 games in his freshman campaign, he came back after the pandemic and started all 26 games he appeared in. This year, he appeared in 28 of of a possible 29 games with 21 starts. In 2022-23, Flanagan was named to the All-CCAA Second Team and averaged a team-high 29 minutes with 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, and was twice named Gator of the Week. The Liberal Studies and Communication Studies major scored a career-high 22 points in a Senior Day win on February 25 over Cal State East Bay and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds in a November 13 win over Dominican.
The Arete Award is given to a student-athlete who has earned a 3.0 or higher grade point average at SF State, completed an average of 12 units per semester, performed community service and also had an outstanding career in his/her respective sport. This year's Arete Award winner was baseball player Jordyn Eglite. The Martinez native wraps up his career after six seasons as a Gator and, due to the pandemic, has the rare distinction of suiting up for five seasons. Eglite will close out his career ranked in the top ten in several categories: he's tied for seventh with 13 wins on the mound, fifth most games played with 57, third most innings pitched with 230.1, and second in career strikeouts with 173. A leader on and off the field, this Kinesiology major earned CCAA Academic Honors the past three seasons.
Baseball's Nick Upstill is the men's Athlete of the Year. Upstill led the conference in batting average for a good part of the season and finished in the Top 10. Against Sonoma State on May 6, he hit his 12th career triple, giving him sole possession of the school's triple record. With nine on the season, he currently sits atop the NCAA leaderboard in that category. Upstill was named to the All-CCAA First Team and finished the season with a team-leading .367 batting average, 69 hits, and 36 runs.
On the women's side, track & field athlete
Macaria Moore-Bastide took home Athlete of the Year honors as a freshman. In only her second career indoor meet, she jumped a provisional mark and second-best mark in school history in the high jump. She earned USTFCCCA All-West Region Honors in that event for Indoor Track & Field. That mark punched a ticket to Indoor Nationals, where she earned All-American status with an eighth-place finish. During the outdoor season, she was named the CCAA Field Athlete of the Week twice and has held the top jump in the conference the entire season, which culminated in winning the High Jump at the CCAA Championships with a jump of 1.72m. Her season's not over as she looks to continue to add to her outstanding freshman season with a strong finish at NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colorado.
