ROHNERT PARK, Calf. — The San Francisco State women's basketball team did the improbable on Saturday with a 68-57 come-from-behind win over Sonoma State inside the Wolves' Den.
- SF State snaps a five-game losing streak and improves to 4-12 overall and 3-8 in CCAA action. The Seawolves fall to 11-7 and 6-5 in conference play.
- The Gators trailed by as much as 26 in the first half and used a 30-point fourth quarter to earn the victory.
- Alexsandra Alvardo, the Gators' leading scorer, added 22 points with 16 coming in the fourth quarter. She was 7-of-11 from the field and raised her average to 16.5 points per game. She has scored 20 points or more five times this season.
- Brilonnie Bell had a career day with 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting, as well as five rebounds.
- Perséas Gioukaris and Sage Bridges-Bey scored eight points apiece in the win.
- The Gators won the rebounding battle, 38-33, led by seven from Bridges-Bey.
- After shooting just 13.3 percent (2-of-15) in the first quarter, the Gators rebounded with a strong second half and finished the game at 48.1 percent (25-of-52), including an incredible fourth quarter in which they shot 84.6 percent (11-of-13).
- Sonoma State finished the game just one for its last 18 field goals, including 1-of-11 from deep.
- The Seawolves were without their leading scorer, forward Alli McDonald, for a second straight game. They were led by Madisyn Clark, who scored 13 points on 3-of-17 shooting. All of her field goals came from deep to go with four free throws.
Sonoma State went up 20-8 early in the second quarter and led by 26 before closing out the first half up 43-19.
The Gators opened the second half on a 12-3 run to pull to within 15. After Sheering Arikat slowed the Gators run with a turnaround jumper, Bridges-Bey hit a three-pointer and Alvardo got the rim for a layup to cut the Seawolves' lead to a dozen. An Alvardo steal with two minutes to go in the third quarter led to a
Brilonnie Bell layup that cut the lead to 48-38.
SF State made its first four field goals of the fourth quarter and a 9-0 Gators run cut the lead all the way to 51-47. Alvarado scored six straight points and the Gators took a 58-55 lead with 1:40 to play. The Gators made their final three field goal attempts and went 3-of-4 at the free throw line as they closed out the game on a 10-2 run for the win.
The Gators return home for their next two games and will host Stanislaus State on Thursday, January 25 and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, January 27.
