SAN FRANCISCO - A late goal proved costly for the San Francisco State women's soccer team as the Gators dropped a heartbreaker to Chico State on Friday by a final score of 2-1.
- The Gators go to 3-7 this season, 0-3 in Conference play while the Wildcats move to 4-2-4, 1-1-1.
- SF State out-shot the Wildcats 6-4 in the first 45 minutes.
- Kelsey Burrus scored her first collegiate goal, and has a career-high three shots on the year.
- Cameryn Nunn had six saves in all 90 minutes, her seventh complete game this season.
- Grace Messenger led all players with three shots, tying a season high.
Nunn got going early as she made a nice save in the fourth minute on a shot from Brynn Howard. The sophomore and the Gator defense kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the first half despite Chico State taking four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
In the 38th minute, Olivia Chimienti took a shot that bounced off the far-left post and came right back to her, and she then tried to punch it in on the right side but it went just wide of the post. Messenger ended the first half with a shot that narrowly sailed left of the goal as we headed into the half scoreless.
Nunn deflected a shot off the foot of Hannah Pieri in the 61st, but the ball took a lucky bounce off the far post and rolled in for the first goal of the game. Burrus found the equalizer five minutes later as Lauren François sent a free kick into the box, which bounced around in front of the goal before Burrus netted it to make it 1-1. Chico State bounced back late, and Jiana Martin scored the game winner in the 88th as she punched it past the diving Nunn.
Nunn (3-5-0) had four saves on six shots faced in the second half. Her six total saves are one away from tying her career high. Emma Hofmann got the start and played the first half. Claire Schnabel (1-0-0) got the win by making one save and allowing one goal in the second half.
