ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team was shutout by host Sonoma State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
- The Gators move to 1-8-5, 1-4-3 in conference play this season, while the Seawolves move to 5-6-5, 3-5-1.
- Hayden Frost had five saves in all 90 minutes.
- SF State had 11 shots in the effort, the seventh time they've had double-digit shots this season including the fourth time in CCAA play.
- The game saw 38 fouls called, 24 of which were called on Sonoma State.
- Michael Rodriguez was sent off with a red card in the 35th minute, leaving the Gators a man down for over half the contest.
Angel Herrera took a free kick from a few feet outside the box in the fifth minute but his attempt was punched out by Sonoma State goalkeeper Jack Chapman. Frost was also tested early, saving a shot to his left off the foot of Alejandro Verdugo in the ninth minute of action.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute as Jvon Cunningham crossed it in from the right and Michael Gray was able to one-touch it past the diving Frost. Sonoma State had a breakaway in the 27th minute, however Marco Valdez closed in and made a great sliding play on the ball to thwart the threat. The Gators had another free kick opportunity from right outside the box, this time in the 36th minute, but the shot was blocked by the wall of defenders. SF State wrapped up the first half with its 14th free kick of the day from just inches from outside the box, but the attempt was blocked.
Herrera sent in another shot on goal in the 60th, but it was stopped by Chapman. Sonoma State added to its lead in the 64th on a ball that bounced around in front of the goal before being sent to the back of the net by Verdugo. The Gators had three shot attempts in the first 15 minutes as they looked to get on the board, but couldn't break through.
Frost (1-3-3) started his fifth consecutive game for the Gators. Jack Chapman (4-6-5), who has started in all 15 games for the Seawolves this season, made four saves on Sunday.
