How It Happened

Consecutive Flowers buckets, including a three-pointer, put SF State up 7-5 early on. The Lions utilized a 6-0 run to go up 13-9 on back-to-back layups by Chris Chiles. Bakke's turnaround jumper ended the run and made it 13-11 with 15:22 left in the first, and Alec Smith's layup tied things up the next possession. Vanguard put together a 7-2 run, which was split up by Devon Jackson's first basket of the day, to go back up, 20-15. A three from the top-right of the arc by Pernell made it a three-point game with under nine to go, and Alex Gilat leveled things up at 23-all following the media timeout with a triple, with both shots assisted by Flowers. The Lions bounced back with a 7-0 run to push their lead back up to 30-23 with five minutes left in the frame. After another Pernell triple the Lions put together another run to go up 36-26. Donovan Cooks closed out the scoring for SF State in the half with a free throw and Vanguard went into the locker room up 38-30 after one.

The Lions stormed to a 50-32 lead out of the break on 4-of-7 shooting including 2-of-3 from deep in about two minutes. Pearse Uniacke made a layup to stop the run on an assist from Jackson at the 17:52 mark. SF State found an offensive rhythm midway through the second half as Jackson knocked down an and-one free throw with 14:41 to go, but Vanguard made three-straight layups the ensuing possessions to go up 61-39. Pernell hit his third triple of the day and followed up with a layup to cut it to 20. Flowers knocked down a three off a pass from Uniacke to make the score 64-47. Vanguard closed out the game with four triples in the final four minutes to walk away with the 84-60 win.
