MBB | Gators Fall to Oaks

SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State men's basketball team dropped their CCAA/PacWest Classic finale to Menlo, 72-60 on Saturday night.

  • SF State goes to 2-4 while Menlo moves to improves to 2-2.
  • The Gators struggled from three-point range, shooting a season-low 25 percent (5-of-20).
  • Caleb Oden led the team with 14 points, John Bakke had 12 points, five rebounds and dive assists. Tyjean Burrell added 10 points and three boards, and  Pearse Uniacke posted six points, five boards and a team-high four steals.
  • The Oaks assisted on 11 of 14 baskets in the first half.
  • Menlo had 42 points in the paint compared to SF State's 28. The Gators were also outrebounded, 39-23.

How It Happened

Menlo started out 5-of-8 from the field to take an 11-9 lead in the first five minutes, with Oden hitting a layup and a three-pointer the next possession as part of SF State's nine points. Flowers' jumper at the top of the key tied things up at 11-all. CJ Bellamy scored five-straight points for SF State, capped off by a triple to narrow the deficit, 24-21. Uniacke's dunk off a behind-the-back pass from Bakke made it a one-point game with 4:51 left and force a Menlo timeout. The Oaks pushed their lead to 36-30 with under a minute left but Burrell knocked down a pair of three throws to close out the half, with SF State trialing 36-32.

Burrell's steal and fast-break layup made it 39-36 with over 18 left in regulation. Another steal and subsequent fast-break layup by SF State a few plays later, with the steal coming from Uniacke and layup from Bakke, tied the game at 39-all. Bakke hit another shot out of the timeout to give SF State a two-point lead before the Oaks got a three-pointer from Riley Robinson to take a 42-41 lead. The visitors pulled ahead 52-47 midway through the frame on Julius Alcantara's layup. Uniacke followed with another basket and Devon Jackson hit a three by the Gator bench to cut it to one, but the Oaks continued to answer with another jumper in the paint to take a 55-52 advantage. SF State struggled offensively in the closing minutes, going scoreless for over two minutes while the Oaks went on an 8-1 run to push their lead to 69-57. Menlo ended the contest on a 9-3 run, capped off by Oden's three-point jumper with 19 seconds left, for the 72-60 win.
