POMONA, Calif. — The No. 21 San Francisco State volleyball team became the NCAA West Regional Champion after defeating #10 Cal Poly Pomona (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) in the championship match. The Gators lost to the Broncos twice this season but proved third time's a charm and rose to the challenge to claim victory.
- SF State heads to NCAA Championships with a 24-6 record. Cal Poly Pomona, who was the CCAA regular season champion, ends its season at 25-4
- The 2024 volleyball team is the first team at SF State to advance to a National Championship since the softball team did it in 2005.
- Kimberly DeBoer, Izzy Issak and Brianna DeBoer all were named to the All-West Region Tournament Team.
- Izzy Issak led the way with 14 kills and reached 1000 career kills, joining teammate Tamiya Wilson.
- Brianna DeBoer had a match-high 23 digs.
- Kimberly DeBoer added 30 assists to her season total and now has recorded the third-most in a single season with at least one more game to play.
- The Gators got excellent contributions from the front of the net and tallied 10 total blocks. Katie Parker had a team-high five, followed by Wilson and Anastacia Garza with four.
- Sarah Ybarra had 10.5 points to lead Cal Poly Pomona.
Anastacia Garza connected on a pair of kills and Wilson landed an ace and a kill to start set one off on the right foot and force a Pomona time-out. A 6-0 run that featured a pair of aces from Issak put the Gators up 18-7 and gave them a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Wilson's three aces got the Gators off to another hot start for set two as the Broncos signaled for a time-out down 6-0. The Broncos got within two down 21-19 but three straight points from the Gators got them to set point. A service error by
Taylor Vales gave the Broncos the serve but the returned the favor with an error two serves later.
In a tight set three, the Gators were never able to pull away like they were the previous two sets. Up 17-15, an error gave the Gators the serve back, Goodrich landed a kill and Wilson and Garza went up for a block to get the Gators within five points of a championship. A couple of Gator errors opened the door for the Broncos but three straight service errors by Pomona stopped any momentum and the Gators were able to maintain their lead for the win.
The Gators will head to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the NCAA Championship at Sanford Pentagon. Game one will take place on December 12. More details will be added to sfstategators.com throughout the week.
