SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team got another strong start from Ryan Garza and made good decisions at the plate to take a 5-2 victory over Western Oregon at Maloney Field.
- SF State improves to 3-2 while Western Oregon falls to 0-3. The Wolves made NCAA regionals a season ago.
- The Gators had seven walks and four hit by pitches with three of them leading to runs scored.
- SF State had six hits compared to Western Oregon's five. Antonio Nanez was the lone Gator with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
- Derek Laferriere had a game high two RBIs.
- Anthony Alvarez hit the Gators' first triple of the season.
After a quiet first two innings, Armando drew a two-out walk, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Santos launch the first hit of the game into left center.
Anthony Alvarez was close to hitting it over the fence in the sixth but settled for a triple. Laferriere drove him home with a sac fly to give the Gators a 2-0 lead. The Gators loaded the bases in the seventh inning.
Matt Sugden drew a full count walk.
Anthony Alvarez got a free base on a hit by pitch to add another run. Laferriere added the third run of the inning with a walk to go up 5-0.
Western Oregon finally got on the board with a Sac fly in the eighth. The Wolves hit a solo shot in the top of the ninth with one out but could not get anything else going from there.
- Ryan Garza (2-0) made his second start of the mound. After not giving up a hit a weekend ago, Garza gave up his first hit in the third inning. He finished the day with three hits, one walk and eight strikeouts through six scoreless innings.
- Andrew Silva went three innings to earn his second save of both the season and the week. He gave up a pair of runs and hits while tossing two strikeouts.
