SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team rallied down 10-4 in the eighth and walked it off in the ninth for a 12-11 victory over Western Oregon at Maloney Field Sunday afternoon.
- SF State improves to 4-2 while Western Oregon falls to 0-4. The win marks the first walk-off of the season.
- The Gators had a season-high 14 hits on the young season. Christian Smith went 4-for-5 while Anthony Alvarez was 3-for-5. Both players had the only extra base hits for the Gators with Smith hitting a double and Alvarez going out of the park with a home run.
- Christian Smith stole his first base of the season.
- For a second straight game, the Gators drew four hit by pitches.
- Western Oregon edged the Gators with 15 hits, five going for extra bases. They also had three successful sac buts and a sac fly.
Justin Johnson drew a two-out walk and back-to-back singles from the Gators brought Johnson home for the first run of the game in the first. The wolves loaded the bases with one out in the second but only tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Western Oregon's Herzog hit a lead-off double in the top of the third, Curran Mitzel followed it up with a triple and Owen Bishop brought him in to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead. The Wolves batted around the order in the sixth, plating four runs to go up 7-1. The Gators cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning. With no outs and a pair of runners on,
Christian Smith doubled up the middle to plate one runner. A wild pitch advanced all the runners and allowed for the second run of the inning.
Antonio Nanez put the ball in play to allow Smith to score and cut the lead to 7-4.
The Wolves put up more crooked numbers in the eighth, extending the lead to 10-4.
Daniel Santos hit a sharp ball to third to bring in a run in the bottom of the inning. With bases loaded,
Anthony Alvarez knocked the ball over the left field fence to cut the lead to 10-9. Alvarez took over on the mound in the top of the ninth, allowing a run to be scored off a sac bunt but limiting the damage to that. The Gators loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth.
Armando Murillo drew a pitch to the side to bring the Gators back within one.
Justin Johnson delivered at the plate, hitting the ball down the left field line to drive two runs in for the walk-off victory.
