AZUSA, Calif. — The San Francisco State baseball team played 11 innings in game one with Azusa Pacific and took a tough 19-18 loss but bounced back in game two with a 10-6 win.
- SF State sits at 5-4 while APU stands at 4-8
- Between the two games, the Gators drew 16 walks including 10 in the seven inning game two.
- Justin Johnson, Derek Laferriere, Cole Thompson and Armando Murillo all homer on the day. Thompson hit his first of the season.
- The Gators had a season-high four stolen bases in game two with Christian Smith recording two.
- The 17 hits in game one were the most on the season.
Game One
The Gators offense exploded in the first inning, scoring nine runs off nine hits.
Derek Laferriere put the exclamation point on the inning with his two-run bomb over the left field fence. In the second,
Anthony Alvarez hit a lead-off single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored off a wild pitch. A two-out error by French in the fourth allowed a runner to score and a double from Medina gave APU their second runner of the game.
Cole Thompson responded for the Gators in the fifth with a two-run blast to give them the 10-run back at 12-2.
In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars drove in five runs, with three of them coming from a homer, to cut the lead to 12-7. They put up more crooked numbers in the sixth, coming within one run of the Gators lead. The Gators brought the lead back to five runs in the seventh as Johnson and French hit back-to-back two-run doubles. Leading 16-13 in the ninth, the Gators had a chance to close out the game, but a three-run homer tied things up and forced extra innings. Johnson hit a two-run homer to give the lead in the 11
th, but the Cougars put up three runs in the bottom of the inning to clinch the win.
Game Two
Gators loaded the bases in the first.
Anthony Alvarez moved everyone 90 feet with an RBI single while French hit a sac fly to give the Gators a 2-0 lead.
Camden Andrews drew a lead-off walk in the second inning and Murillo brought him home with a double to left center. APU scored on an RBI single in the bottom of the inning for their first run of the game. In the top of the third, Alvarez scored on a balk and French was plate thanks to a single up the middle from Allred. A couple of miscues led to a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Murillo hit a three-run homer to extend the Gators' lead to 8-3 in the fifth. A throwing error from the second baseman allowed another run aboard in the inning. Omar Lopez cut into the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. French hit a lead-off triple to open the sixth and walked in on a passed ball. The Cougars would hit another two-run homer to cut into the Gators' lead in the sixth but the Gators kept them off the board in the seventh for the win.
- Theo Dopkins made his first career start, pitching two innings and tossing four strikeouts. He gave up two runs, four hits and two walks.
- Mickey Radanovich threw three innings and earned the win, only giving up one earned run while tossing three strikeouts.
- Ian Sullivan closed out the game, pitching two innings and throwing two strikeouts.
