SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team had the tying run at third and winning run at first in the ninth but ultimately fell in a 5-4 loss to Westmont at Maloney Field.
- SF State falls to 2-2 while Westmont improves to 3-2-1. Westmont won a NAIA National Championship last season.
- Armando Murillo and Justin Johnson both went 2-for-4 at the plate and both had extra base hits.
- For a second straight game, the pitching staff did not give up a walk.
- The Gators turned their first double-play of the season, finishing the game with three.
Murillo got the Gators on the board first with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first.
A one-out double, followed by a triple got the Warrior's first runner on the board in the third and an error advanced the runner at third home. The Gators equalized in the fourth when Johnson reached second on a lead-off double and advanced on back-to-back fly outs. An RBI single to right field allowed the Warriors to regain the lead in the fifth. Westmont added insurance runs with a two-run homer over left field in the seventh.
Daniel Santos and Johnson hit back-to-back singles and advanced a base off a wild pitch.
Anthony Alvarez sent the ball to left field to get the Gators back within two. Down 5-4,
Johnny Alvarez pinch hit and arrived at first on a single down the left field line. Murillo singled up the middle to get runs on the corners. Santos had a chance to tie or win the game but he popped the ball out to the middle outfield.
- Nathan Shinn (0-2) went five innings in the loss, giving up seven hits, three runs and two earned runs. With four strikeouts on the day, Shinn moves into eighth all-time with 134 career strikeouts.
- Ian Sullivan, River Diaz De Leon, Christian Casillas and Trent Lopez each threw an inning in relief with all four tossing at least one strikeout in the proccess.
- Evan Johnson picked up the win for Westmont while Lucien Wechsberg had the save.
