HAYWARD, Calif. — Down by three in the eighth, the San Francisco State baseball team put up eight runs to win 11-5 over Cal State East Bay and claim a series sweep.
- SF State improves to 17-9 and 11-5 in the CCAA and sits in third in the conference, one game back from second. Cal State East Bay falls to 12-12 and 4-8 in the CCAA.
- The Gators swept a conference opponent on the road for the first time since 2018 when they swept Cal State San Marcos.
- Justin Johnson continued his hot streak and hit a homer for a fourth straight game. On the weekend, Johnson went 9-for-18 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. With 34 RBIs on the season, Johnson already has the most RBIs by a player since the 2018 season.
- Every Gators in the starting line-up recorded a hit. The Gators accomplished this in every game this series. Other than Johnson, Matt Sugden was the only other Gator to hit an extra base on the day with a 3RBI double.
- SF State turned three double plays on the day.
- The Gators finished with 13 players left on base.
Daniel Santos hit an RBI single to right field for the first run of the day in the top of the first. The Gators would get runners in scoring position the next three innings but were not able to capitalize. SF State finally added another run when
Justin Johnson hit a solo homer to left field.
The Gators gave up back-to-back singles to open the sixth inning and three straight doubles by East Bay gave the Pioneers their first lead of the weekend at 4-2. They tacked on another run in the sixth with a two-out RBI single.
The Gators rallied in the eighth to plate eight runs and reclaim a lead they would never relinquish. SF State loaded the bases with no outs.
Armando Murillo hit a sac fly to get a run back. French sliced a single up the left side to make it a one-run game. The bases loaded up for Johnson and the third baseman singled to right to advance everyone 90 feet and tie the game. Santos took a hit by pitch to give the Gators the lead back at 6-5. Sugden cleared the bases with a double to extend the lead to 9-5.
AJ Schrader capped off the scoring with an RBI single.
Johnson would add an insurance run in the ninth with a sac fly to go up 11-5.
- David Eichhorn was effective through five innings but run into trouble in the sixth, giving up five runs off seven hits. He tossed two strikeouts in the no decision start.
- Andrew Silva (2-1) closed out the game and went three innings, only giving up one hit and a walk while throwing two strikeouts.
- East Bay's starter Derek Murphy proved the Gators trouble early on, striking out eight through 5.2 innings and giving up a pair of runs.
- Jackson Ellis (3-1) took the loss for East Bay
