SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State softball team split its final home doubleheader of the season on Saturday afternoon at SFSU Softball Field. The Gators dropped game one 5-1 and earned the series split with a 5-1 win of their own in game two.
- SF State moves to 20-23 and to 16-16 in CCAA play. SF State is tied for fifth place with Cal State East Bay, and the Gators hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Pioneers. The Gators will need help next weekf from from Stanislaus State vs. Cal State East Bay or Cal State San Bernardino, who faces seventh-place Cal Poly Humboldt. SF State also won the season series versus the Lumberjacks.
- The Wildcats keep their playoff hopes alive and move to 13-25 overall and 12-20 in CCAA play, though they would need to win out and have help.
- SF State honored its five seniors – Madeline Eshbach, Taylor Kelly, Kaitlyn Maddux, Mia Misasi, and Phoebe Schultz – in a pregame ceremony.
- The seniors came up big. Misasi had a two-hit, two-RBI day. Schultz had a walk and an RBI. Maddux pitched a scoreless inning and two thirds, and Kelly recorded the final two outs of game two.
- The Gators had five stolen bases on the day, bringing the team total to 67, just one behind league-leading Sonoma State. Kai DeLeon is second in the CCAA with 20 and Marley Gonzales is third with 19.
Game One
- The Gators took the early lead with a two-out rally in the second inning. Samy Vargas singled to left and Mia Misasi doubled her home for the 1-0 lead.
- Chico State answered in a big way with a five-run third inning that was the difference in the ballgame. Five straight batters reached, capped by a three-run homer to left by Hannah Levy. Gators starter Mari Takeda Bajan settled down after that and retired ten straight before issuing back-to-back walks in the sixth that ended her day.
- SF State threatened in the third when Marley Gonzales reached on a fielding error and stole both second and third, but was ruled out of the runner's lane on a pickoff attempt that ended the inning. The Gators got a pair of runners on in the sixth but left the pair stranded. Misasi and DeLeon drew back-to-back walks in the seventh but the Gators failed to bring them home.
- Takeda Bajan (7-11) had one bad inning in six and a third innings. She allowed all five runs in the third on three hits with an error, making one run unearned. She only gave up one additional hit in the second inning. Takeda Bajan walked five and struck out five, bringing her season total to 74, which is eighth in the CCAA.
- Kaitlyn Maddux pitched an inning and two thirds of scoreless relief. She issued back-to-back walks in the seventh but got three straight outs, including a pair of strikeouts, to get out of it.
- Amelie Valdez (7-14) went the distance for the Wildcats. She scattered just two hits, walked six, and struck out five. Valdez is sixth in the CCAA with 83 strikeouts.
Game Two
- The Gators manufactured a 3-0 lead in the third and never looked back.
- SF State added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Gonzales led off with a double and Guerrera singled her for Guerrera's team-leading 24th RBI.
- With one out and runners on first and second, Misasi drove in her second run of the day with a single to right center.
- Chico State got a run back in the seventh on a Levy two-out single to left field.
- Elise Roy (12-7) allowed just one run on seven hits over six and a third innings of work. She walked one and struck out four.
- Kelly came gave up a hit and a walk but recorded the final two outs of the game to secure the victory.
- Wildcats starter Kateln Oldwin (5-11) gave up three runs, two earned, on just two hits. She walked one and struck out three before being lifted after just two and two thirds innings.
- Chloey Swenson came on in relief for the Wildcats and gave up a pair of runs in the final three and a third innings. She gave up four hits, walked a pair, and recorded a strikeout.
