SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team dropped its final home game of the season to Cal State LA 12-8, resulting in a series split. The Gators had a big first inning but could not capitalize with runners in scoring position outside of the sixth inning as the Golden Eagles came from behind to take the game.
- SF State falls to 25-21 but remains in fourth place in the CCAA standings at 19-17 thanks to Chico State also losing today. Cal State LA moves to 22-24 overall and is now in a tie for sixth place with Sonoma State at 16-20.
- Daniel Santos hit his first career triple and went 2-for-3 at the plate to get back over .300 on the season. Santos also drew his 27th walk of the season and remains among the most in the conference.
- The Gators drew six walks and three hit by pitches while their pitching staff only gave up two walks.
- The Gators left 13 runners on base, including bases loaded in the second and the ninth.
- Prior to the start of the game, the Gators honored their eight seniors: James Kobylt, AJ Schrader, Theo Dopkins, Ethan Remmers, Cole Thompson, Derek Laferriere, Garrett Jensen and Trent Lopez.
With two quick outs to start the first, the Golden Eagles hit back-to-back singles to get runners on. The Gators had a chance to get out of it unharmed but an error in center allowed both those runners to score.
Daniel Santos sparked a five-run two-out rally in the bottom of the inning. With a pair of runners on, he tripled two allow both to come home. Kyle Olympia came up to bat with runners on the corners and singled to right to bring Santos home.
Andrew Silva brought another run in with a single to right and a Wild Pitch allowed Olympia to score.
With runners on the corners and no outs, the Gators were only able to get one out as Elijah Jackson scored from third to cut the Gators' lead to 5-3. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth, came within one with an RBI single and tied it when they scored on a wild pitch. They loaded the bases with one out but a double play by the Gators ended their rally. Gators loaded the bases again in the sixth with one out.
Anthony Alvarez hit a single to right field that allowed two runners to cross and a third came home off a bad throw from the third baseman.
The seventh inning proved to be the undoing for the Gators as the Golden Eagles scored five runs off four hits to take a 10-8 lead. A two-run homer from Kai Penuelas added insurance in the top of the ninth. The Gators loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run up to bat in
Justin Johnson but Johnson flied out in the final at bat of the game.
- After a long day the day before, David Eichhorn (4-4) gave the Gators length on the mound, going 6.2 innings in the loss. He gave up 10 runs with eight of them earned and 12 hits.
- Remmers, Dopkins and Kobylt also pitched in relief.
- Anthony Diaz (2-2) earned the win in relief while Brent Jacques picked up his third save.
The Gators have one more series left in the regular season at Cal State Dominguez Hill, beginning May 2nd at 3 p.m. They will look to clinch their spot in the CCAA Tournament with a win in game one and losses to Cal State LA and Sonoma. The game will be broadcast on the
