SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team wrapped up its homestead on Thursday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Menlo.
- The Gators improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Oaks fall to 0-2.
- Olivia Chimienti scored her first goal of the young season, and goalkeeper Cameryn Nunn earned her second win of the year.
- SF State held a 10-3 shot advantage over Menlo in the contest, including four shots on goal. The 10 shots are a season high for SF State, and seven different Gators recorded a shot.
- Thursday's victory is SF State's first shutout of 2024.
The Oaks had a breakaway in the 12th minute as Lyla Devereaux shot it on goal, however Nunn made a nice save to her left to keep it scoreless. Nunn had another key save in the 30th minute to keep Menlo off the scoreboard, one of two saves she had on the day.
SF State broke through in the 40th minute as Chimienti intercepted the Oak's clear attempt, closing in on the Menlo 'keeper to find the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. The Gators held a consistent pressure against the Oaks offensively, controlling possession for a majority of the contest.
Emily Gehrlein-Allen fired a shot in the 71st minute looking to add to the score, but the ball narrowly sailed over the crossbar.
Menlo would add the pressure in the final 15 minutes of regulation looking for the equalizer, however the Gator defense kept the Oaks in check to preserve the shutout.
Nunn (2-1-0) played all 90 minutes for the second time this year. Thursday's performance was her second career shutout. Oaks goalkeeper Giorgia Melcore had three saves in the effort.
"It's a great win," said head coach John DeMartini. "Wins aren't always the prettiest but understanding how to win at home, how we become the team we want to become by winning games that are close, and you have to grind it out. A lot of freshmen and sophomores that don't necessarily get a chance to play got a chance to shine today was really great. [Olivia] Chimienti got her first collegiate goal at our level and we're super happy for her. We're making home a place where we come to win and defend it well."
The Gators kick off their road slate on Sunday, September 15 at 1 p.m. at Dominican. Live stats will be available at sfstategators.com, and a live stream will be available on the PacWest Network.
