COSTA MESA, Calif.— The San Francisco State women's soccer team scored off a set piece with 5:31 to go for a 1-0 victory at Vanguard on Saturday afternoon at VU Soccer Complex.
- The Gators' record moves to even at 3-3 on the year while Vanguard falls to 1-3.
- SF State held a slight 7-6 shot advantage, and both teams placed four shots on goal.
- The Gators also held a 5-3 corner kick advantage, which proved costly for the Lions.
- Two of SF State's three wins this season have been by shutout.
- Emily Gehrlein-Allen scored the game-winner, the freshman's second goal and second game-winner of the season.
- Defenders Lauren François and Kylee Medlin both played the entire 90 minutes.
The two teams looked destined to add their first ties of the season to their overall records but the Gators' fifth corner kick of the day turned the tides for good. François set up on the left side. After her teammates lined up, she placed a great ball into the box. Lions goalkeeper Jordin Holmquist-Wilder got her hand on the ball and the ball bounced around the box but Gehrlein-Allen was there on the right side of the goal mouth for the finish. The Gators defense locked down and did not allow a shot over the final five and a half minutes.
Cameryn Nunn (3-3) had four saves en route to the clean sheet for SF State.
Holmquist-Wilder (0-2) made three saves and took the loss for the Lions.
The Gators return home to Cox Stadium for their next match, a non-conference contest versus Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, September 28 at 3 p.m. That will also be Senior Day and the Gators will honor their six seniors – Luci Gulbransen, Kai Larrucea, Kylee Medlin, Grace Messenger, Brynn Reyes, and Rylee Velez. Live stats will be available at sfstategators.com and the game will be broadcast on FloFC.
