SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's basketball team played Sonoma State close but could not keep pace with them in the fourth and fell 67-60 at home to open the New Year.
- The Gators fall to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the CCAA. Sonoma moves to 5-5 and 3-1 in the CCAA.
- Both teams excelled at taking shots at the line and went 16-for-20.
- Sonoma edged the Gators in shooting and shot 46.0 percent from the field compared to the Gators' 38.5 percent.
- Three players finished in double-digits for the Gators: Alexsandra Alvarado (14), Ana Daniels (13) and Sage Bridges-Bey (10)
- Daniels had a season-high four blocks.
- Jayme Blackard led all players with 17 points.
After both teams exchanged baskets to open the game, Sonoma went on a 12-0 lead to go up 17-7 before a pair of made free throws from Daniels stopped the bleeding. Sonoma's Abbey Hadsell made a pair of baskets to extend the Seawolves' lead to 21-9 at the end of the quarter.
The Gators were able to contain the Seawolves in the second quarter and stole the ball six times off seven turnovers. SF State was automatic at the line and went 7-for-7. Daniels and Seilala Lautaimi made both shots at the line in the final minute to cut the lead to 30-25.
Alvarado's driving lay-up at 3:04 in the third gave the Gators their first lead in the second half. Sienna Cherwinski 's three put Sonoma up 43-40 with 50 seconds to go. Nyana Asiasi's jumper made it a one-point game heading into the fourth. Sonoma opened the fourth with a 8-1 run, forcing a Gator timeout with 7:06 remaining. The Gators caught some steam late but could not overcome the 14-point lead Sonoma built in the fourth.
