ATHERTON, California. - Behind a 29-point game from
Geriah Bradley, the San Francisco State women's basketball team opened up the season with a 80-71 win over Jessup University.
- SF State opens the season 1-0 for the first time since the 2022-23 season.
- In addition to the 29 points, Bradley led the team in assists (five) steals (three) and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the line.
- Athena Brombacher and Deonna Mayfield also finished in double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively.
- Three-point shooting proved to be a difference maker. The Gators went 9-for-24 while Jessup shot 1-for-8.
- The Gators were excellent at the line and went 19-for-23.
- SF State was nearly equal in rebounds with Jessup and finished one shy of theirs with 29.
The Gators scored seven points off second-chances in the first quarter to take an early 18-7 lead. Jessup scored a lay-up in the final 16 seconds to cut the Gators' lead to single digits. Jessup cut the Gators lead to 20-17 with 7:10 left in the second quarter. Leilani Blecha had a pair of three's and Bradley added one of her own in a 9-2 run to take a 10-point lead. The Gators made their shots at the line down the stretch and closed out the second up 42-30.
Both teams were charged with shooting fouls early in the third as Jessup used it to their advantage to help cut the lead down to 45-39 with 7:21 remaining. The Gators found some rhythem late in the third quarter to retake a double-digit lead. Brombacher scored a lay-up in the final ten seconds to extend the lead to 65-51 at the end of the quarter. Jessup hung around in the fourth and cut the Gators lead down to two possessions. Bradley scored on a lay-up with 2:58 remaining to go up by eight and Giana Darté sunk a three with 1:57 left to give the Gators a 78-67 lead. Jessup missed a pair of baskets and ran out of time down to complete a comeback.
