WBB | Gators Close Out Non-Conference With Loss to Western Washington

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The San Francisco State women's basketball team closed out non-conference action with a 76-59 loss to Western Washington.

  • SF State falls to 2-4 on the season while Western Washington improves to 7-2.
  • Leilani Belcha was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 13.5 ppg on the weekend. She finished with 21 points against Western Washington and six three-point baskets.
  • The Gators stole the ball 15 times including four from Simone Murray and Deonna Mayfield.
  • Western Washington finished with nine blocks on the Gators and had a 46 to 18 advantage on rebounding.
  • The Vikings shot 50 percent from the field while the Gators shot 34.9 percent.

How It Happened


After Blecha cut Western Washington's lead to 11-8 in the first, the Vikings outscored the Gators 12-4 with 51 seconds left in the quarter. Tegan Gaines launched a three in the final seconds of the quarter to get the Gators back within single digits down 23-15. The Gators shot 56.3 percent from the field in the second in order to keep up with Western Washington. Blecha launched a three with under a minute to go in the quarter and Gianna Darté made a shot at the line to make it a two-possession game down 40-34. The Vikings made both shots at the line on the next possession but Geriah Bradley scored to bring the deficit back to six at the half.

The Vikings used a 12-0 run to open the third quarter to take control of the game. The Gators scored their first points of the quarter with 2:31 to go when Gaines launched a three to make it a 57-39 game. The Gators shooting woes continued in the fourth as they shot 16.7 percent in the quarter,

The Gators start conference action and host local rival Cal State East Bay on December 4 at 5:30 pm. The game will be their annual Purple-out game and first 100 fans will receive Purple tshirts. Live stats will be available at sfstategators.com and fans can watch at home on FloCollege.
