SB | Gators Drop Pair on Day One of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. — The San Francisco State softball team suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season with a pair of losses on day one of the Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock. The Gators fell 4-1 to Vanguard and dropped the nightcap 10-7, in 10 innings, to Saint Martin's.

  • The Gators move to 8-3. The Gators split the season series with Vanguard, who moves to 2-6. Saint Martin's improves to 4-3.
  • Kai DeLeon went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI versus Saint Martin's. Daniella Guerrera also went 3-for-5 with an RBI, bringing her season total a team-leading 15.
  • Marley Gonzales and Lexi Holihan also had two-hit performances versus the Saints.
  • Ashley Rocha had two of the Gators' four hits versus Vanguard.
  • The Gators did not steal a base in the loss to Vanguard, marking the first game this season that the Gators have not swiped a bag. Gonzales had a pair of steals in game two, bringing her total to a team-leading eight. As a team, the Gators have 27.

How They Scored


 
  • Vanguard struck for a two-out rally in the fifth inning that resulted in four runs and was the difference in the game. Lilyana Roth and Emma Noble recorded back-to-back singles, then Mari Takeda Bajan got a swinging strikeout for her second out. However, she gave up RBI singles to Kamryn Walker, Adriana Portillo, and Mia Hernandez.
  • The Gators got a run back in the sixth inning on a Guerrera sac fly

  • Maria Takeda Bajan (4-1) went the distance but took her first loss of the season. She allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits. She walked three and struck out a season-high six.
  • LeeAnne Miranda (1-1) picked up the win for Vanguard. She scattered four hits and a walk with one run in a complete-game effort.

How They Scored


 
  • SF State took a 4-0 lead but was unable to hold the lead. In the first, Gonzales doubled, stole third, and scored on a throwing error. Shannessy Cardwell later came home to score an unearned run.
  • The Gators doubled the lead in the second to 4-0. Lexi Holihan sent the first pitch of the Gators' half of the inning to right center and she later came home on a wild pitch. DeLeon sent a two-out single to third based that scored pinch runner Shannon Tierney.
  • A walk and a fielding error alllowed Saint Martin's to get on the scoreboard in the third.
  • The Saints got another run back in the fifth. A walk, another error, and another walk led to another unearned run.
  • A five-run inning gave the Saints the lead in the sixth inning. However, three of those runs were unearned.
  • The Gators rallied in the bottom half of the sixth to tie the game 7-7. Gonzales plated two with a bases loaded single back up the middle, and Guerrera singled to tie it.
  • SF State got a runner to third in the ninth but failed to score.
  • Heather Ebner delivered the go-ahead double. Later, with runners on first and second, Kekai Schultz reached on an error and two runs scored. The Gators went down in order in the tenth.

  • Elise Roy threw five and a third innings and took a no-decision. She allowed seven runs, just two earned, on three hits. She struck out four but walked eight.
  • Kharime Caratachea (1-1) took the loss in relief. She allowed three runs, none earned, on three hits over four and two third innings. She walked three and struck out five.
  • Saint Martin's used three pitchers. Bridget Johnson went three innings, Amanda Peterson tossed two and a third innings, and Chloe Leverington (2-0) picked up the win. Leverington worked four and two thirds innings of three-hit ball.

On day two of the Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock, the Gators will face No. 24 Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington.
