SB | Lights-Out Pitching Lifts Gators to Saturday Sweep

TURLOCK, Calif. - The San Francisco State softball team added two more to the win column on Saturday after defeating No. 24 Northwest Nazarene, 4-2 before topping Central Washington, 5-1 at the Tournament of Champions.

  • SF State moves to 10-3 on the season, while No. 24 Nighthawks are 6-7 and Central Washington is 1-8.
  • Kai DeLeon and Marley Gonzales each had four hits on the day, two in each game. DeLeon tied a season high with three RBI in game one. Kira Nilson went 2-for-4 with one RBI in game two. 
  • Elise Roy, Mari Takeda Bajan and Nia Trinidad each saw action in the circle on Saturday, and each have sub-2.00 ERAs on the year (Roy - 1.31, Takeda Bajan - 1.56, Trinidad - 1.29). The Gators rank in the top-20 nationally with a 1.63 team ERA.

How They Scored


 
  • The Nighthawks plated one in the first as Ava Clark led off with a single and scored on a sac fly to right. Northwest Nazarene had runners on the corners in the second with just one out, but Roy got Annie Swanson out looking and Clark out on a grounder too short to end the inning.
  • The Nighthawks went up 2-0 in the fourth on Kellcie Adams' RBI single to plate Jami Obringer, who doubled down the line.
  • SF State tied things up in the top of the fifth. DeLeon singled up the middle with the bases loaded, scoring Shannon Tierney and Emily Madrigal who both came in as pinch runners. Tierney came in for Lexi Holihan, who doubled with one out, and Madrigal replaced Autiana Buck, who reached on a walk.
  • The Gators plated two more in the seventh. Rylee McDaniel singled to center and came around on DeLeon's single up the middle, and DeLeon scored on Gonzales' base hit to right.

  • Roy (3-0) tossed 5.2 in relief, striking out five and allowing just one earned.
  • Takeda Bajan got her sixth start and struck out one over 1.1.

How They Scored


 
  • Both sides were retired in the first two innings, with Trinidad striking out four of the first six batters she faced.
  • The Wildcats plated one in the fifth as Serena Perez led things off with a single, advanced to second on a sac bunt, went to third on a ground out to third, and scored on Radon Young's single.
  • The Gator offense came alive in the seventh. Shaunessy Cardwell led off the inning with single, went to second on a throwing error by the center fielder and was replaced by Isabel Tellez as a pinch runner. McDaniel was hit by a pitch and Ashley Rocha singled, scoring Tellez and moving McDaniel to second. DeLeon doubled to plate McDaniel and move Rocha to third, and the rally continued as Gonzales singled home Rocha. With one out, DeLeon scored on Holihan's sacrifice bunt, and Nilson scored Gonzales on a single to cap off the five-run inning. Trinidad shut the door in the bottom of the seventh, striking out Reese Schimmel to end the game.

  • Trinidad (2-0) went the distance for the second time this season to earn her second win. The senior struck out five and allowed just one earned.
