BSB | Gators Sweep First Series of the Season

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team took both ends of a double header with Menlo to sweep the series. In game one, the Gators used a six-run second inning to go up big and win 12-4. In game two, the Gators won behind good pitching and base running in a 5-0 victory.

  • SF State improves  4-4 on the season while the Oaks fall to 2-4
  • Michael Cunningham and Nicholas Allred each had three hits in game one with Allred recording three RBIs
  • While the offense was quiet in game two, the Gators had four stolen bases and advanced on six wild pitches to put themselves in position to score. Two of their runs were scored on wild pitches.
  • Six bases were stolen between two games including two by Colby Rafail.
  • The Gator pitching staff put up strong efforts in both games. They struck out 14 in game one and 13 in game two.

How It Happened - Game One



Cunningham hit a lead-off single, stole second, advanced to third and scored on a fly-out sac for the first run of the game. The Oaks took the lead briefly in the top of the second with a pair of solo shots over the left field fence. In the bottom of the second, a pair of Gators were on first and second with no outs. Allred placed a good bunt down and an errant throw allowed one run to score and place runners at the corners. Kyle Olympia singled to add a run. With bases loaded, Cunningham doubled down the left line to bring in two more runs. Daniel Santos followed up with a double to score another pair of runs. A two-run home run from Menlo cut the Gators lead to 7-4 in the fifth. The Gators added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead. Justin Johnson took a HBP with bases loaded and Allred knocked in two more runs. In the next inning, a Wild pitch allowed one to score and Santos hit a single up the middle for the final run of the game for SF State.

On The Mound


 

  • Alex Trukki (1-0) earned his first win on the mound, tossing five strikeouts through 5.1 innings of work. All four runs were charged to him
  • Edrian Rangel pitched 1.2 innings and struck out three.
  • Andrew Silva closed out the game with two innings of work and struck out six of the seven batters faced.
  • Kiel took the loss for Menlo.

How It Happened - Game Two



Menlo juiced the bases in the top of the second with two outs but David Eichhorn got out of the jam with a strikeout. The Gators finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth. With a runner on and one out, Nichols Cook came on to pinch run. He capitalized on a wild pitch and swiped third to put himself 90 feet away from home. Matt Sugden hit the ball to left to bring in the first run of the game. With a runner in scoring position in the fifth, Cunningham singled up the middle to add onto the Gators lead. Stephen Espinoza and River Diaz De Leon were at second and first with one out. Three wild pitches allowed both to come home. Rafail took a free base off a HBP and swipe second on the first pitch he saw. Santos singled to center to bring in the fifth run for the Gators.

On The Mound


 

  • David Eichhorn made his first appearance on the mound, starting and going three innings for the Gators. He gave up three hits and a walk but struck out three.
  • Anthony Alvarez (1-0) pitched an inning after him and tossed a pair of strikeouts.
  • Nathan Shinn picked up his first save of the season after pitching three scoreless frames in relief. He tossed six strikeouts and only allowed one baserunner on.
