BSB | Gators Pick Up Two More Wins, Clinch Series Win Over #8 Chico

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team resumed their halted game from the day before and shut out #8 Chico State 4-0. The Gators put it together both on the mound and at the plate for a series clinching 7-1 win to close out the weekend.

By the Numbers


 

  • SF State improves to 7-5 on the season and 3-1 in the CCAA while the Wildcats fall to 8-5 and 1-3 in the CCAA.
  • The shut out in game one was the second of the season.
  • Derek Laferriere and Justin Johnson each connected on their first home runs of the season. Johnson's 16th career home run puts him fifth all-time.
  • Laferriere added two stolen bases in game two.
  • Johnson and Kyle Olimpia each had three hits in game three.
  • The Gators limited the Chico offense to three hits in game one and five in game two.

How It Happened - Game One



Leading 3-0 heading into the sixth, Anthony Alvarez came in to replace Trukki. He sat down the first two batters easily, walked the next one and the got a foul out to head to the bottom of the inning. Daniel Santos hit a lead-off hit, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and came home off a single from Justin Johnson. Alvarez went back out on the mound to close the game out and allowed the first two batters aboard. Looking to close out the game, the Gators turned to Andrew Silva who retired the next three batters.

On The Mound - Game One


 

  • Alek Trukki (2-0) earned the win after five scoreless frames.
  • Anthony Alvarez pitched an inning of scoreless baseball in the sixth.
  • Andrew Silva picked up his second save in two days.
  • Jeremy Keller (0-1) took the loss for Chico.

How It Happened - Game Two



David Eichhorn allowed base runners in each of his first two innings but double plays in both innings erased the runners. The Gators did most of their damage in a four-run second. Nicholas Allred hit a lead-off double and Laferierre brought him home with a base hit. Laferierre made his way to third and Olimpia brought him home with a single to left field. SF State loaded the bases and Daniel Murillo and Aaron Roberts drew back-to-back RBI walks. Johnson hit a solo home run in the third and Laferierre in the fifth to make it a 6-0 game. With runners on the corners and two outs, Colby Rafail hit a single up the middle to add an insurance run in the seventh. Chico ended the shutout in the eighth with a solo shot over center field by Daniel Vierra. After the home run, the Gators retired the next four batters to end the game.

On The Mound - Game Two


 

  • David Eichhorn went six scoreless to pick up his first win of the season.
  • Nick Bacura, Edrian Rangel and Scott Bauman each pitched an inning in relief. Bauman needed only ten pitches in the final inning.
  • Rocco Borrelli only made it through 1.2 innings and was on the hook for the loss.
