SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team capitalized on free bases and slugged its way to a 13-5 win over Cal State San Marcos in game one of a doubleheader. In game two, both teams were quiet offensively but the Gators were able to edge the Cougars 2-1.
- SF State improves to 14-13 on the season and 10-9 in the CCAA. Cal State San Marcos falls to 11-11 and 6-7 in the CCAA.
- Michael Cunningham hit his second home run of the series and tenth of the season to surpass his total from 2023. His 19 career home runs moves him to sole possession of fourth all-time and three away from tying th record. He also added a double in game one and drew three hit by pitches between both games.
- The Gators drew five hit by pitches and six walks in game one.
- The pitching staff limited the Cougars to one walk in game one and three in game two.
- Both Daniel Murillo and Cunningham scored team-high three runs.
- Nicholas Allred hit his first home of the season in game two.
Cunningham got the Gators on the board in the first inning with a two run homer. He drew a four-pitch walk in the third, stole second and advanced on a throwing error and scored off the sac fly.
Jackson Wood hit a lead-off triple in the fourth and eventually came home off a wild pitch. After the Cougars came within one of the lead with a three-run blast in the fifth, the Gators offense put up crooked numbers in the bottom of the inning. With a pair of runners first and second and one out, Wood hit an RBI single down the left line.
AJ Schrader hit a triple down the right line to clear the bases and add two runs.
Kyle Olimpia brought Schrader home with a single to make it a 8-3 game. In the sixth Murillo drew a lead-off walk and Cunningham doubled to put both in scoring position. A passed ball advanced both and Allred singled to right to bring in the second run. The Gators added three more insurance runs in the seventh. Murillo singled to right to plate a run. With the bases loaded,
Justin Johnson hit a 2 RBI single to left to extend the lead to 13-3. The Cougars would hit a two-run homer in the eighth but would not get much more going the rest of the way.
- David Eichhorn (4-0) put together another solid outing, going six innings and tossing four strikeouts while giving up five hits and a walk. All three runs came off a three-run homer.
- Jude Atley gave the Gators two innings of work, tossing three strikeouts while giving up two runs and three hits.
- Scott Bauman allowed a pair of hits in the ninth but came out unscratched.
- Spencer Anderson (3-1) took his first loss of the season.
With a pair aboard to opening the bottom of the second, Allred moved them over with a sac bunt and Johnson hit a ground out RBI for the first run of the game. Allred hit a homer over the left field fence for what would eventually be a much needed insurance run. The Cougars had a pair of runners on with two outs in the fifth when Garrett Teunissen hit an RBI single to right to cut the lead in half. The Cougars only got one runner on the next two innings while the Gators' pitching staff struck them out three times.
- Aaron Roberts made his debut on the mound to start game two. He tossed two strikeouts to start the game and was saved by Allred who robbed a homer for out number three in the inning. He finished the going two scoreless.
- Alek Trukki (3-0) pitched 2.2 innings in relief giving up two hits, two walks and the lone run of the evening. He also tossed two strikeouts.
- Anthony Alvarez went 1.1 innings, only giving up one hit while tossing a pair of strikeouts.
- Nick Bacura put together a dominate 1-2-3 inning for his first save of the season.
- Jordan Towley (2-3) took the loss for San Marcos.
