SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball pitching staff limited the Cal State San Marcos Cougars to three hits and was backed up by strong defensive plays in a 3-1 victory that clinched the series.
- SF State improves to 15-13 on the season and 11-9 in the CCAA. The win moves them in a tie for sixth in the CCAA with Chico State. Cal State San Marcos falls to 11-12 and 6-8 in the CCAA.
- The Gators fielded three double-plays on the day.
- The majority of Cougars base runners came through free passes. They drew five walks and three hit by pitches.
- AJ Schrader was the lone Gator with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 with a double and run scored.
- Justin Johnson mashed his third home run of the season, bringing him to 18 career homers.
The Cougars drew a lead-off walk to open the game, advanced the runner on a pair of groundouts and scored off a sharp hit to short.
Daniel Murillo scored in a similar fashion. He drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a groundout and came home via a single by
Nicholas Allred. Both teams went hitless the next three innings.
AJ Schrader hit a lead off double in the fifth. Derek Laferierre hit a single and stole second to eliminate the double play option. Olipmia grounded out on the next at bat, allowing Schrader to come home. The Gators faced adversity in the eighth when the Cougars loaded the bases with one out but
Daniel Murillo and
Jackson Wood turned a double play to get out of the inning unscratched. Johnson added an insurance run with a first pitch home run in the ninth. The Cougars got a hit in the ninth but couldn't do much with it.
- Tyler Ohlson made his first start on the mound, going 3.2 innings while giving up a run off two hits and a walk. He also threw three strikeouts.
- Edrian Rangel came in during the fourth and retired both batters he face.
- River Diaz De Leon (1-0) relieved Rangel in the fifth to keep the Cougars off the board.
- Ryan Garza pitched 2.2 innings. He tossed two strikeouts but gave up four walks.
- Anthony Alvarez came in during a high leverage situation of bases loaded and was aided by the defense with a double play to end the inning.
- Nick Bacura picked up his second save of the weekend to close the game.
- Zach Colemen (1-4) took the loss for the Cougars.
