SAN FRANCISCO — THe San Francisco State baseball team fell short of taking the opening series with Cal State Dominguez Hills and fell 3-1.
- SF State falls to 9-8 on the season and 5-4 in the CCAA. The Toros improve to 11-7 and 7-2 in the CCAA.
- Toros only recorded one more hit than the Gators as they finished with nine. Derek Laferriere and AJ Schrader each had two hits for the Gators.
- Double plays killed rallies for the Gators as they hit into three. Defensively, they turned two.
- The Gators' pitching staff did not give up a walk while batters only drew a walk.
Michael Cunningham and
Daniel Murillo had back-to-back hits to open the game and place runners at the corners with no outs.
Nicholas Allred Lined out to first and Murillo was off the bag for the double play. A groundout on the next at-bat ended the inning. The Toros' Noah Karliner hit a lead-off double in the fourth, advanced on a fly out and scored off an RBI single. The Gators hit three straight singles in the bottom of the fourth with no outs. Laferriere hit a sac fly to tie the game but a double play crushed any rally. Karliner scored in a similar fashion in the top of the sixth and the Toros added another insurance run to lead 3-1. The Gators would only get a runner in scoring position once the rest of the way.
- Ryan Garza (1-3) pitched well despite the loss, going six innings while giving up three runs off eight hits.
- Anthony Alvarez pitched the final three innings and gave the Gators a chance to come back with three scoreless frames. He only gave up one hit and struck out five.
- Darren Roberts took the win while Julian Castro picked up a save.
