SAN FRANCISCO — The No. 24 San Francisco State softball team settled for a doubleheader split versus Sonoma State on Friday at SFSU Softball Field. The Gators squeezed out a 2-1 victory but were unable to close out game two and fell 10-6.
- SF State, which is ranked No. 24 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, moves to 16-6 on the season and 5-3 in CCAA action. The Seawolves move to 14-11 overall and 4-6 in CCAA play.
- Kai DeLeon had a four-hit day. Marley Gonzales had three hits on the day and Rylee McDaniel had a pair of hits in game two. Shaunessy Cardwell, last week's FloCollege/CCAA Player of the Week, drove in a pair of runs.
- DeLeon swiped her 57th and 58th stolen bases to surpass Nicole Hartfield for sole possession of fourth place on the program's all-time career steals list. Gonzales had two steals and is on DeLeon's heels with 57, which passes Jordanna Freemer and ties Hartfield.
- As a team, the Gators now have 51 stolen bases, which passes the 2007 squad's 50. The Gators will crack the Top 10 in team single season history when they get to 56, set by the 2004 team.
- Guerrera also moved up on the program's career RBI leaders list. She had three on the day is now alone in 10th place with 84.
- The two teams game one starters, Elise Roy and Charlie Johnson ended up with the decisions in both games after they both came on in relief for game two. Roy got the win in game one while Johnson earned the game two victory.
Game 1
- SF State took the lead in the fourth thanks to a throwing error. Gonzales doubled down the line and scored when Guerrera reached on a throwing error.
- A couple of walks led to a run in the sixth. The Seawolves tied the game on Iris Bejarano's RBI single that plated Amari Houston.
- The Gators answered right back though in the bottom half of the sixth. DeLeon had a leadoff single, then stole second and third to move up on the career steals list, and scored easily on Guerrera's RBI single up the middle, which moved Guerrera up on the career RBI list.
- Roy (6-1) was dominant in game one. She scattered three hits and faced just six over the minimum.
- Johnson (8-7) was nearly as good but errors behind her proved costly. Johnson surrendered two runs, one earned, on four hits. She struck out three with no walks.
Game 2
- SF State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first but the Seawolves tied it in the top of the second. SF State answered with a three-run second to regain the lead.
- The Gators added another run in the fourth on a Guerrera RBI single that plated Gonzales.
- The Seawolves pulled to within a run with a three-run inning of their own in the fifth.
- Then, down to their final out in the seventh, the Seawolves unloaded for a five-run frame that stunned the Gators. SSU loaded the bases with no outs but Roy quickly got two outs. However, Taylor Rapp drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 6-6. Kaiya Dickens followed with a two-run single that put the Seawolves up for good. Olivia Gabriel was then hit with the bases loaded and Sophia Newcomb drew another bases-loaded walk before the Gators got out of the inning but the damage was done. The Gators got two on and had the tying run in the on-deck cirlce but were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh.
- Takeda Bajan settled for a no-decision after five innings of work.
- Roy (6-2) didn't fare as well in game two. She blew the save and was charged for five runs on four hits in just an inning and two thirds.
- Kharime Caratachea pitched a third of an inning.
- The Seawolves also used three pitchers. Starter Nichole Sarra lasted just two innings and gave up five runs. Ava Paquin allowed a run in two and two thirds innings. Johnson picked up the win with two and a third innings of one-hit ball.
The two teams will meet for their final regular-season meeting on Saturday, March 8 at 11 a.m.. In January, Sonoma State announced the discontinuation of its entire athletics program at the end of the 2024-25 season. Saturday's doubleheader will be broadcast on
