BSB | Gators Earn Second Walk-Off Win of the Weekend in Doubleheader Split

SAN FRANCISCO  — The RV San Francisco State baseball fell short in a 8-6 loss in game one of a doubleheader with Cal State East Bay. They rallied for a second time this weekend with a walk-off bases loaded walk in extras to take game two 5-4.

  • SF State sits at 28-16 on the season and 23-12 in the CCAA. East Bay sits at 17-28 and 13-22 in the CCAA
  • Michael Cunningham added to his CCAA leading home run total of 16 with two more home runs. He showed off his power with one in game one and speed with an inside the park one in game two.
  • Daniel Santos went 2-for-3 in game one with a pair of RBIs and a double. His 33 career doubles sits fourth all-time and his 114 career RBIs ties teammate Justin Johnson for second all-time.
  • The Gators finished game one with eight plays left on base and two runs going down as unearned.
  • East Bay stole four bases on the Gators including three in game one.

How It Happened - G1



The Gators drew back-to-back lead-off walks in the second. AJ Schrader hit an RBI single to right to score one and put the other at third. Daniel Santos laid a bunt down for a suicide squeeze and successfully brought the runner at third home. Murillo singled to right to bring Schrader home for the third run of the inning. The first two lead-off batters got aboard in the third. A failed pick-off moved both into scoring position. First run scored off a single to left while another scored off a sac fly. Matt Sugden hit a single to short and Daniel Murillo brought him home with a double down the left line. Home runs by Jordan Klinovsky and Danelle Daniels gave the Pioneers a 5-4 lead in the fifth. Santos doubled to left center to bring home Wood to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth and Cunningham hit a solo shot over the left field fence to give the Gators the lead. East Bay tied it in the seventh with a two-out RBI single and added runs in the eighth and ninth inning to take a 8-6 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Gators were retired in order to end the rally.

  • Ryan Garza went 4.1 innings in the no decision start. He tossed five strikeouts and gave up eight hits, five runs, four earned runs and two walks.
  • Edrian Rangel and Scott Bauman each pitched in relief with Rangel giving up an unearned run.
  • Tyler Olsen (1-1) went three in relief, giving up two runs off four hits and striking out two.

Wood hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Gators a 1-0 lead after one. A sac fly by East Bay tied things up in the second. Allred singled in the third and Cunningham showed off his speed with an inside the park home run. An RBI single from the Pioneers cut the Gators lead to 3-2 in the fourth. An RBI triple by East Bay's Micah Cevantes tied the game in the fifth amd a sac fly gave the Pioneers the lead. With Nicholas Cook in to pinch run in the sixth, Laferriere took a hit by pitch and Murillo hit an RBI double to tie the game. Nick Bacura got all his outs through strikeout in the seventh but the Gators couldn't capitalize. With starting pitcher Gabe Tanner gone in the bottom of the eighth, Stephen Espinoza hit a lead-off double. Schrader bunted him over and arrived safe at home. After Schrader stole second, East Bay elected to intentionally walk Cook with no outs. Their pitcher could not find the zone, tossing a four pitch walk to Laferriere to end the game.

  • Anthony Alvarez went four innings, giving up two runs off three hits and throwing a strikeout.
  • Daniel Smith came in during the fifth but did not record an out and gave up two runs.
  • Nick Bacura (2-0) gave the Gators four strong innings of relief in the win. He gave up a walk and a hit and struck out three.
  • Sergio Calderon took the loss for East Bay.
