SAN FRANCISCO — The RV San Francisco State baseball team shinned in their final game at Maloney Field, defeating Cal State East Bay 11-2 to clinch the series and a berth in the CCAA Tournament.
Prior to the start of the game, the Gators honored their 23 seniors. They also paid special recognition to the alumni who came out at the top of the fifth inning.
- SF State improves to 29-16 on the season and 24-12 in the CCAA. With one more series remaining, the Gators sit tied for first with Cal State Dominguez Hills. A series win or split with Cal State Monterey Bay will give the Gators a bye in the CCAA Tournament. The Gators will also be doing some scoreboard watching on the series with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA for a chance to be named the regular season CCAA Championship. East Bay falls to 17-29 and 13-23 in the CCAA.
- Daniel Murillo went 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs, three runs and a double. The CCAA leader in hits, Murillo has 82 on the year and sits at fifth most in a single season.
- Michael Cunninghame went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run.
- The Gators had three stolen bases on the day, one from Nicholas Allred, one from Stephen Espinoza and one from Derek Laferriere.
- Justin Johnson and Daniel Santos each added an RBI to their overall count. The pair both have 115 career RBIs.
- East Bay had three errors on the day.
Murillo hit a lead-off single up the middle in the first and Cunningham brought him home with a double. A seven run output in the third put the game out of hand early on. Laferriere drew a hit by pitch and Murillo brought him home with a double down the left line.
Justin Johnson hit a sac fly with runners on the corners and
Jackson Wood singled to left field to make it a 4-0 game. The inning looked to be over but the first baseman bobbled
AJ Schrader's hit to him, allowing the inning to continue. Santos drew an RBI walk with bases loaded. Everyone advanced a base off a wild pitch. Laferriere got plunked for a second time and Murillo brought two more Gators home off a single to make it a 8-0 game. The Pioneers finally got on the board in the seventh with a pair of runs off three hits. With Espinoza at third in the bottom of the inning, Laferriere laid down a bunt for a suicide squeeze but the well executed bunt resulted in a single and run scored. Laferriere stole second and Murillo brought him home on the next pitch. Murillo made his way to third off a
Christian Smith single and Cunningham hit and RBI single to cap off the scoring for the Gators.
- David Eichhorn took the mound one last time and was hitless through the first four innings. His final stat line through 6.2 innings was five hits, two runs and six strikeouts. His season ERA dipped under 3.00 at 2.97, making him one of three starting pitchers in the CCAA with an ERA below three.
- Alek Trukki took the ball next, going two innings and facing the minimum. He also added a strikeout.
- Andrew Silva came in with one out to go and got the final out for the Gators.
- Owen Gallegos was charged with the loss for East Bay.
