IRVINE, Calif. - The San Francisco State softball team opened the morning with an early game against Hawaii Hilo where they held on for the 3-2 win. They picked up a big early season 12-3 win against #3 Western Washingon in five innings.
- The Gators improve to 2-2 with the pair of wins.
- SF State picks up its first win against an opponent in the top five since it beat Chico State 7-4 on March 8, 2020. Western Washington represented the West Region in last year's DII Softball championships.
- After a couple of errors on day one, Shaunessy Cardwell more than made up for it with her bat She went 4-for-4 against Hawaii Hilo with three doubles and all three RBIs. She went 2-for-3 in the Western Washington game with three more RBIs.
- The Gators worked the bases against Western Washington, drawing seven walks, stealing two bases and advanced on three wild pitches and a passed ball.
- Ashley Rocha hit the first triple of the season, drilling a hit down the left field line against Western Washington.
Malia Morreira hit a sharp hit to the short stop in the top of the third and Olivia Mares drew a walk. Rocha laid down a sac bunt to advance the runners and Cardwell drilled the ball down the right field line to bring both home. Hilo's Harl Acosta hit a first pitch single up the middle to open the bottom of the sixth and cut the Gators deficit in half when her teammate Kanoe Piltz doubled to bring her home. Mares reached first on an infield single in the seventh, stole second and gave the Gators an insurance run off a Cardwell single to single. After Alexis Perez allowed the first two base runners on with no outs in the seventh, Kharime Caratachea came on to close the game. She induced a fly out on the next batter but allowed an RBI single that cut the lead down to 3-2. On the next at-bat, Mares hustled down the right field line, caught the ball in foul territory and threw to second to get the third out. The officials overturned the out at third but the Gators induced a ground out on the next at bat.
- Alexis Perez (1-1) earned her first win in the circle, giving up six hits, two runs, three walks and struck out two
- Kharime Caratachea picked up a save in relief, only giving up one hit.
The Gators drew five walks in the first inning alone as they went up 5-0.
Taylor Rapp did most of the damage with a bases clearing double to bring in three runs. A pair of Viking runners were on with two outs in the bottom of the inning when Emily McCutcheon doubled to plate both. The Gators went on to score four unanswered runs with Cardwell credited with two RBIs. Western Washington hit an RBI double in the bottom of the third to cut th lead down to 9-3. The Gators scored twice in the fourth and once more in the fifth to lead 12-3 and win by run-rule.
- Kharime Caratachea (1-1) picked up her first win of the season. She gave up five hits, three runs and a walk.
- Mac Ferguson (0-1) only last .1 inning before being pulled.
