How It Happened

The Gators were up 7-5 to start set one before the Otters went on a 10-1 run to take a commanding lead. Errors by the Otters helped the Gators cut the lead down to 18-16. A 4-0 run where Lilly Rix had a block and a kill to cut the lead down to one at 21-20. The Otters called a time-out and recorded the next two points out of the timeout. The Gators were forced to side-out each time they scored after that.

Larson had a block and a kill to open the second set 4-0. The Gators led by as many as six in the set and after being tied 6-6, held a lead of two or more points the rest of the way. Larson had six kills in the set while Goodrich had five.

The Gators trailed throughout the third set. A service error cut the Otters lead to 23-22, Goodrich landed an ace and a bad set gave the Gators set point. Monterey Bay's Kayla Smith landed a kill to continue the set. The Gators reached set point several times, but the Otters pulled away in the end.

After a back and forth start to set four, the Gators used a 5-0 run to go up 9-6 and force a Monterey Bay timeout. The Otters retook the lead later in the set. Witcher had a pair of kills that put the Gators up 20-17, forcing the Otters to use their second timeout. The Otters landed a kill out of the timeout but could not string back-to-back points.

The Gators fell behind 5-1 in set five and called a time-out. Down 10-5, Witcher had three kills in a 5-0 run to tie the set up. The Otters went on a 3-0 run to take a 14-12 lead. An attack error by the Otters put the Gators within one. The Otters called a timeout to regroup, and Goodrich landed a kill out of the timeout to keep the set going.
