SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's basketball team saw its offense pick up the pace in the second half, especially from deep, in a 63-53 win over UC Merced.
- SF State improves to 7-20 on the season and 5-16 in the CCAA. UC Merced drops to 8-20 and also sits at 5-16 in the CCAA
- Gianna Darté came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points.
- The Gators had two players record a double-double in a game since January 20, 2022. Athena Brombacher had 18 points and 11 rebounds for her third of the season. Tegan Gaines had her second double-double in a row, scoring 11 points and grabbing 15 boards.
- The 14 three-point baskets was a new season high. The Gators had five in the third quarter and four in the fourth to push past the Bobcats.
- SF State won the rebound battle 47 to 38.
- Sarina Nagra had 18 points to lead the Bobcats.
UC Merced opened the game up 11-3 halfway through the first quarter. Brombacher drove in a lay-up and Darté dropped a three on the next possession to get the Gators back into it. Darté tied the game up at the end of the quarter but a shooting foul on the Bobcats on their final possession of the quarter allowed them to take the lead back. Neither team scored within the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter. The Bobcats were first to get on the board and used a 8-2 scoring run to build a cushion. The Gators responded with a scoring run of their own. Gaines and Simone Murray hit back-to-back threes to tie the game up. SF State took a slim 27-26 lead heading into the locker room.
The Gators relied on good shooting from deep to hold the Bobcats off in the third quarter. SF State limited the Bobcats to two three-point baskets while Gaines and Darté each had two three-point shots. The Gators led by as many as ten points in the third but the Bobcats closed the gap and trailed 47-43 with one more frame to go. Brombacher and back-to-back lay-ups and Darté made her sixth three of the game during a 10-0 run that put the Gators up by 16 with 2:17 remaining.
