LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - The San Francisco State softball team lost to Northwest Nazarene 10-2 to open the day but bounced back with a 18-5 victory over #3 Western Washington.
- The Gators sit at 6-3 on the season. Western Washington is 5-5 while Northwest Nazaerene improves to 7-4
- SF State set season highs in RBIs (15), walks (eight) and stolen bases (nine) against Western Washington.
- The Gators only had three hits in game one but came alive in game two with 10. Olivia Mares went 3-for-4 with three runs while Kate Nelson was 2-for-3 against Western Washington.
- Mares and Taylor Wilson both had four stolen bases between the two games.
- Olivia Moscardi hit the only extra base hit of the day, a double against Western Washington.
Wilson reached first off an error by the second baseman in the top of the second. Marissa Jordan singled and both runners moved into scoring position off a wild pitch. Mia Pamplona singled up the middle to bring in one run and Anyssa Luttig hit a ground-out RBI for a second run. An RBI double followed by a two-run home run in the bottom of the third gave the Nighthawks the lead. They scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on run-rule.
- Kharime Caratachea (2-2) went 4.2 innings in the loss and was charged with 10 runs with six being earned.
- Tori Hernandez came on in relief to close out the game.
- Riley McGee (1-1) picked up the win for Northwest Nazarene.
The Gators put up seven runs in the bottom of the first. With no outs and bases loaded, Wilson singled, Pamplona drew a walk and Kate Nelson and Ari Mallari each hit singles to record RBIs and take a 4-0 lead. Western Washington made a pitching change and got two straight ground outs that allowed runners to score. Mares went up to bat a second time and hit an RBI single to cap off the inning. WIlson reached on a fielder's choice in the second, stole the next two bases and scored when Nelson put the ball in play. Western Washington added three runs in the third but the Gator offense exploded in the bottom of the inning for 10 runs. The Gators only recorded four hits but drew four walks, two hit by pitches and reached first on two errors for free bases. Western Washington hit a two-run homer to get some runs back in the fifth but it was not enough and the Gators won by run-rule.
- Hernandez made her first start and gave up one hit, three runs and four walks through 2.2 innings. She also struck out four.
- Alexis Perez (4-1) went 2.1 innings and gave up two hits and two runs while striking out three.
The Gators will be off next week and travel to Northwest Nazarene to compete at the Nighthawk invitational from February 19-21. Live stats will be available at sfstategators.com.
