SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State softball team took down Cal Poly Humboldt 5-2 in its first home contest of the season but fell 13-5 in five innings in game two.
- Prior to the game, SF State welcomed back the program's first two head coaches, Coni Staff (1977-78) and Diane Kalliam (1979-1999), to throw out the first ceremonial pitches of the program's 50th season. Between Staff, Kalliam, and current Head Coach Alicia Reid, those three women account for 32 seasons and 502 wins (and counting) for SF State Softball.
- The Gators sit at 11-10 on the season and 2-4 in the CCAA. Humboldt sits at 9-12 and 1-1 in the CCAA
- Errors plagued the Gators in both games with the Gators recording two in each. Humboldt had four in game one but limited it to one in game two.
- Marissa Jordan was 5-for-6 between the two games and had two runs and three RBIs
- Shaunessy Cardwell had doubles in both games on the day.
- Olivia Mares had three stolen bases on the day to give her 24 on the season. The mark is 10th most stolen bags in a single season.
The Gators looked to get out of the first inning unharmed, but a ball put in play slipped under the second baseman's glove and trickled into the outfield to allow a run to score. Mares opened the bottom of the inning with a single and an errant throw to reach second. Malia Morreirra grounded out to allow Mares to advance and another poor throw from Humboldt allowed Mares to score. Cardwell doubled on the next at bat and Jordan singled to left center to give the Gators a 2-1 lead. Humboldt's Alexa Garcia hit a solo shot in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Olivia Moscardi came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and second. The shortstop went for the force out at second but the throw went into the outfield, allowing two Gator runs to cross. Taylor Rapp came up to bat with a runner at third and hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-2. Garcia hit a double for Humboldt in the seventh but the Gators stranded her to end the game.
- Alexis Perez (6-3) tossed five-hit baseball and only gave up one walk and one earned run.
- Lily Fournier (4-6) took the loss, giving up five runs with only two being earned. She gave up eight hits and struck out six.
Humboldt opened the game with a RBI walk. The Gators had back-to-back hits with no outs in the second. Anaissa Del Rio reached on a error, allowing one run to score. A wild pitch allowed a second to cross and a ground out by Deziree Gomez extended the lead to 3-1. Humboldt put up four runs in the third to take the lead again. Mares singled to the pitch in the bottom of the inning, stole second and third and scored off Jordan's single to cut the Lumberjack lead to one. Humboldt took advantage of shaky pitching by the Gators and added five runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. Jordan hit another RBI single in the bottom of the fifth but the Gators could not score enough runs to continue the game past the fifth.
- Kharime Caratachea (4-6) went 2.2 innings, giving up five runs off seven hits and three walks.
- Ariana Bottel (3-2) went all five innings for Humboldt.
The Gators will close out the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 14 against Cal Poly Humboldt. Saturday is also First Responders Day. Ceremonial first pitches will be thrown out by Gators alumni Lori Curran, Jaime Haymond, and Paul Yep. Tickets are on sale at sfstategators.com/tickets and fans can watch at home on FloCollege.
