SB | Gators Battle But Drop Both Games to San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif.— The San Francisco State softball team battled to tie game one with Cal State San Marcos 5-5 but was walked off in the seventh and lost 6-5. They played the Cougars close up until the sixth inning in game two and fell 9-4.

  • The Gators fall to 13-14 on the season and 4-8 in the CCAA. The Cougars improve to 26-3 and 8-2 in the CCAA
  • Shaunessy Cardwell continued to provide the hot bat for the Gators, extending her hit streak to nine games. In game two, Cardwell lifted her third home run of the season.
  • Cardwell also had three walks on the day to tie for the lead in the CCAA with 22 walks.
  • Kate Nelson, who's hit in every game of the series, went 2-for-4 in both games.
  • The Gators left nine runners on base in game one and eight in game two.

How It Happened - G1




San Marcos had a runner at second with two-outs in the bottom of the second. The Gators had runners on first and third in the top of the third. The runner at first went, allowing Rocha at third to score and tie the game. San Marcos had back-to-back innings of scoring two runs to take a 5-1 lead heading into the fifth. The Gators loaded the bases with one out in the firth. Marissa Jordan grounded out but everyone advanced a base. Taylor Wilson reached by an error from third to allow another runner to score. Nelson made it a one run game with a hard hit to shortstop. In the top of the sixth, Jordan came up clutch with runners on the corner and singled to center to tie the game. The Gators had a chance to go to extra innings with two outs and a runner on second but a single down the left side allowed San Marcos to score the winning run.

  • Kharime Caratachea (4-7) was able to limit the damage despite 13 hits to six runs, with five earned. She tossed four strikeouts and only allowed one walk.
  • Madison Cabrera got the start and went 4.1 innings, giving up four runs with only one earned.
  • Daleah Cardenas (10-0) pitched in relief to earn the win.

How It Happened - G2


Cardwell got the Gators on the board first in the third with a two-run homer, her second of the series. The Cougars had two runners on by walk with two outs in the bottom of the inning when Jillian Albayati homered to flip the score in the Cougar's favor. The Gators had runners on first and second in the top of the fifth. The catcher made the throw to third trying to get Rocha out but the throw was errant and allow Rocha to score. The bases loaded up and a Wild Pitch allowed a runner to cross and for the Gators to take a 4-3 lead. The Cougars hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead and had another three-run inning in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead that they would hold onto.

  • Alexis Perez (8-5) had a strong start with most of the damage done in the fifth and sixth inning. She gave up eight hits, nine runs and five walks. Also struck out five.
  • Jordan Hill (10-2) pitched five innings in the win.

The Gators will take a break from conference action and play Jessup on March 27. First pitch of the doubleheader starts at noon.
