CHICO, Calif. — The San Francisco State softball team won a pair of games over Chico State in wildly different fashions. The offense shined in a game one 11-2 fifth inning run-rule victory to start the day.
Alexis Perez pitched a shut-out in game two and the Gators got the go-ahead run off a sac fly in the seventh to win 1-0.
- The Gators improve to 16-17 and 6-8 in the CCAA. The Wildcats fall to 14-16 and 8-10 in the CCAA.
- SF State had 12 hits in game one and 10 hits in a game two where they only scored one run. They also had five walks in game one and six stolen bases.
- Ashley Rocha was nearly automatic and went 3-for-4 in both games. She had three RBIs in game one.
- Shaunessy Cardwell had another double in game one to bring her season total to 14 to lead the CCAA.
- Olivia Mares added two more stolen bases in game one to bring her season total to 29 and tie for seventh in a single season.
- Marissa Jordan had four RBIs on the day including the game winner in game two.
Marissa Jordan hit a two-out RBI single to left field in the top of the first. Kate Nelson was walked. Both tried to swipe a bag and the throw to third was wide, allowing Jordan to score. Deziree Gomez hit a first pitch single to left in the second and made her way to third via a wild pitch and ground-out. Malia Morreira hit a full-count double to left field. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Cardwell battled until she hit a double to deep left to bring both it and extend the lead to 5-0. The Wildcats had runners in scoring position with no outs but the Gators limited the damage to one run. Nelson drew another walk in the third, stole second and advanced on an error to reach third. A safety squeeze by Gomez allowed her to score to make it a 6-1 lead again.
Rocha and Mares hit back-to-back two-out RBI singles in the fifth. With bases loaded, Jordan put the ball in play and a bad hop in addition to a bobble from the outfield allowed three runs to score. The Wildcats scored a run in the bottom of the inning but the mercy rule was in play and the Gators took the game.
- Alexis Perez (9-7) limited the damage through five innings. She allowed five hits and three walks but only allowed two runs. She also struck out four.
- Reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week Amelie Valdez (8-6) only went 1.2 innings in the loss and gave up five runs off five hits.
In a stalemate, the Gators were unable to get a runner in scoring position until the fourth inning. Cardwell and Jordan both had hard hit singles in the infield but were stranded. Chico looked to break the game open in the bottom of the fifth with two-outs but Perez got a swing and miss on a full count to end the inning. The Gators loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. They finally broke through with a sac fly from Jordan. Chico's lead-off runner reached first to open the bottom of the inning but Perez was able to retire the next three in order to preserve the shut-out.
- Alexis Perez (10-7) pitched her first shut-out and limited the Wildcats to seven hits, all singles. She gave up one walk and struck out three.
- Bella Tavares (4-7) also pitched a strong game in the loss. She gave up 10 hits but only allowed the one run off the Sac fly.
The Gators close out the week with their second doubleheader against Chico State on April 3. First pitch of the doubleheader starts at noon. Fans can follow on FloCollege.
