SB | Gators Fall In Pair of Close Games to East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. — The San Francisco State softball team hung close in a pair of games with #10 Cal State East Bay but dropped both. The Pioneers came up on top in a close 2-1 game one. The Gators lead throughout game two but a pair of home runs lifted East Bay 8-6 in game two.

  • The Gators fall to 20-25 and 9-15 in the CCAA. East Bay improves to 36-10 and 18-8 in the CCAA.
  • Shaunessy Cardwell hit a double in game two to give her 16 on the season, two shy of tying the most in a single season.
  • Olivia Mares had two stolen bases in game two to bring her season total to 38, second most in a single season.
  • East Bay only out hit the Gators five to two in game one but a pair of doubles proved to be the difference maker as both scored runs.
  • Marissa Jordan had a pair of doubles in game two.
  • The Gators only struck out once in each game.

How It Happened - G1


The Gators loaded the bases in the second inning. Anyssa Luttig launched a single to left field to bring one run in but the next two batters were retired by strikeout and fly out. The Pioneers hit a one-single in the fifth and had two runners on when first bobbled the ball. Ava Benavides hit a double that brought in the tying run. The runner from first tried to come home but Luttig tagged the runner at home. The Pioneers broke the tie in the next inning with an RBI double from Rylee Gomez. Kate Nelson drew a lead-off walk in the seventh but the Gators could not advance her further.

  • Alexis Perez (13-10) went six innings and held strong against East Bay. She gave up five hits, two runs with one earned and a walk.
  • Marissa Quintero (24-4), the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week, pitched a complete game. She gave up four walks and two hits and limited the Gators to one run.

Cardwell and Wilson each had a pair of 2 RBI doubles to give the Gators an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. In the second with Mares on third, Cardwell laid down a sacrifice squeeze to extend the lead to 5-0. The Pioneers had five hits in the bottom of the inning but the Gators limited the damage to two runs. They put up another two-run inning in the bottom of the third to make it a one-run game. Jordan hit an RBI double in the fourth to get a run back. The Gators led 6-5 in the sixth but the pioneers hit a solo home run, followed by a two-out two-run home run to take a 8-6 lead. The Gators were able to get the tying run in scoring position in the top of the seventh but the runners were stranded.

  • Tori Hernandez and Kharime Caratachea teamed up to pitch the first three innings, giving up five runs between them.
  • Alexis Perez (13-11) pitched the final three innings, with all three runs coming off home runs.
  • Jaidyn Gamble (10-6) went 5.2 innings to pick up the win for East Bay. Marissa Quintero came in during the final inning for her third save of the season.
