Santa Barbara, Calif.--- In their seventh straight match on the road to begin the 2008 season, it was the SF State Gators (5-2) falling in four sets (20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 14-25) to the second ranked team in the nation in Cal Baptist this afternoon in the final match of the Westmont College Volleyball Invitational in Santa Barbara, California.
The Cal Baptist Lancers (11-0) defeated Cal Poly Pomona last night in Riverside in four sets. Fei Shhi led the Lancers with 22 kills for a .438 hitting percentage while recording three blocks and Bree Rauschenbach had six total blocks. Beth Perkins (Woodland, California, Mt. Hood Community College)led the Gators with 13 kills for a .375 hitting percentage and added three total blocks. Christina Johnson (Wildomar, California, Elsinore HS) recorded 18 digs and Mary Maiocco (Bakersfield, California, Bakersfield HS) had 31 assists.
"After losing two close games, it was good to see our girls battle back to win the third set against a very good Cal Baptist team," said SF State Head Coach Michelle Patton. "Even though we were not able to complete the comeback to win the match, we saw a lot of encouraging things from our young team that we can build on."
SF State will have its home opener this Tuesday, September 9th at 7pm against the Pacific Union College Pioneers. This will be the beginning of a brief three-game home stand for the Gators. Next weekend, SF State will host its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) openers when the Gators host Cal Poly Pomona (Friday, September 12) and Cal State San Bernardino (Saturday, September 13). Both match times are set for 7pm.
