Chico, Calif.--- SF State Gators played their sixth overtime game and fourth of the last five in their scoreless double overtime at the No. 21 Chico State Wildcats (7-3-3, 5-1-2 CCAA) this afternoon.
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus)recorded four saves en route to her second shutout of her collegiate career for the Gators.
“We stopped the bleeding this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “We played well today and handled the No. 21 Chico State Wildcat,” added Hyde. “Although, we still need to get that goal, I was really happy on how we played today.”
Chico State, who currently leads the CCAA North Division, out-shot the Gators (3-6-3, 1-5-2 CCAA) 13-11, but SF State had more shots (10-6) than the Wildcats in regulation. Each team had four shots on goal including three coming off the foot of
Allyson Freitas (Gardnerville, Nevada, Douglas).
Freitas' first shot on goal attempt came in the 21st minute, but Natalie Bensky recorded one of her four saves in goal for the Wildcats. Chico State's only chance in the first half came with less than four minutes left when Jones stopped Denni Joe Berger's shot.
The second half just saw three shot on goal attempts with two coming from Freitas. Her first one came in the 69th minute and the second two minutes later. Chico State's try came from Molly Downtain in the 89th minute but Jones stepped to send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, SF State had the first chance but
Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra ) shot was stopped by Bensky (who had four saves in goal for the Wildcats). Chico State's chance came as the horn sounded to end the first overtime period as Kasey Walls' shot was stopped by Jones. The Wildcats registered all four of the shots in the second overtime period, but each of them either sailed wide or were blocked.
SF State will return home to begin a season long four-game home stand beginning with a 3pm starting match this Friday, October 9 against Cal Poly Pomona at Cox Stadium on the campus of SF State. The Gators will finish the 2009 regular season with seven of their last eight games at home.
