ROHNERT PARK.--- Sonoma State Seawolves (4-4-1, 2-2-1 CCAA) rallied from a two goal deficit this afternoon at Seawolf Field to defeat the visiting SF State Gators 3-2 in double overtime. Meghan McGrew connected on a ball from Kiley Brown to score the golden goal with three minutes left in the second overtime. With the loss, SF State falls to 3-4-2 overall and 1-3-1.
“We played a great first half with two great goals coming off the feet of
Myriah Johnson and
Allyson Freitas,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “Sonoma State came out and pressured us in the second half and we gave up two goals to send the game into overtime,” added Hyde. “We need to learn how to play a whole game and not just one half, hopefully we can bounce back on Sunday at Humboldt State.”
Myriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park)connected on her first goal of the season as she scored from 20 yards out in the 5
th minute to give the Gators an early 1-0 lead. The Gators kept up the pressure as
Allyson Freitas (Gardnerville, Nevada, Douglas) scored her first collegiate goal on a header off a cross from
Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra ) in the 17
th minute to give SF State a 2-0 lead going into the half.
Sonoma State came out with the pressure in the second half. Taylor Colacion's shot was saved by the Gators'
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) three minutes in the second half. The Gators came right back as Freitas' shot was saved by Alexis Sciacqua two minutes later. The Seawolves had seven more shot attempts to the Gators' one in the next 20 minutes, that is when Lindsay Catton connected on a corner kick from Ashley Martin in the 74
th minute to cut into the Gator lead, 2-1.
SF State had two chances to increase its lead, but Freitas and
Nicole Smith's shot's but went wide left. At the 83:17 mark, Catton connected on a penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2 after a Gator was called for a hand ball in the box.
The first overtime period saw just one shot by the Gators in the 95
th minute as
Kara Cunningham (Rohnert Park, California, Rancho Cotate)'s header went wide left. Sonoma State had three shot attempts including one that was saved by Jones in the 92
nd minute.
In the second overtime,
Andrea Carey's headerin the 106
th minute was blocked by the Sonoma State defense which would have gave the Gators the victory. One minute later is when McGrew connected on a ball from Brown from 20 yards out for the game-winner.
Sonoma State out-shot the Gators 25-14 including 5-2 in the overtime periods while
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus)recorded five saves in goal for SF State. Courtney Grixti had one save in the first half for Sonoma State while Alexis Sciacgua had three in the final three periods.
The Gators continue their season long four-game road trip this Sunday, September 27
th for a 2pm CCAA match in Arcata, Calif., against the Humboldt State Lumberjacks.
