LOS ANGELES – SF State women's basketball team snapped their four-game losing streak this evening by defeating Cal State LA Golden Eagles, 59-50 behind Andrea Ohlssen (Pacifica, Cal Poly Pomona) 12 points. The Gators (6-9, 2-5 CCAA) forced 30 turnovers by Cal State LA while recording 16 steals in the victory.
“Our best effort thus for in regards in regards to playing inspired basketball after a difficult loss last night,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace. “Defense was outstanding as usual and we finally rewarded ourselves with a much needed win against an extremely athletic Cal State LA team,” added Wallace. “Finally our seniors led the way which help gain their confidence,”
The first half saw 8 lead changes and seven ties with the biggest lead being 20-14 with 7:15 left in the stanza held by Cal State LA. The Gators outscored their hosts 14-7 in the final seven minutes of the half to take a 28-27 lead into the locker room.
SF State started the second half where the Gators left off in the first going on a 10-3 run to take a 40-32 lead at the 13:02 mark on a jumper by Donisha Tate (Oakland, California, Las Posita College). They increased their lead to 59-42 (the largest of the game) on a ZaLisha Oliver (Sacramento, California, Luther Burbank)jumper with 2:10 left in the game.
Oliver finished with 12 points off the bench for the Gators while Tate added 11 also off the bench for SF State. The Gators' bench outscored the Golden Eagles' bench 45-25 and also scored 32 points off Cal State LA's turnovers.
Cal State LA (3-9, 1-6 CCAA) was led by Jazzi Johnson with a game high 23 points and also had 12 rebounds. Jordan Kuzma added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
SF State held its hosts to just 30% shooting for the game including 16.7% from three-point land.
The Gators continue their four-game road trip this Thursday, January 14 in Hayward, Calif., for a CCAA game with the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay.
