ARCATA, Calif.--- In thanks to two first half goals, the SF State women's soccer team improved to 5-2-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a 2-0 road conference victory over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks at Redwood Bowl in Arcata. This was the Gators' sixth shutout of the season and third game in a row that they have not allowed a goal by their opponents.
“We played very well this afternoon in a tough place to play,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “Our first goal was great as Michelle (Kay) came in from the back to bullet one past the goalkeeper and the second one by Andi (Carey) was also a bullet on a corner kick,” said Coach Hyde. “We came out with a lot of spirit and passion this afternoon.”
Michelle Kay (Campbell, California, Presentation HS) connected on the Gators' first goal in the 13th minute as she took a loose rebound from a missed shot by
Kara Cunningham (Rohnert Park, California, Rancho Cotate) on the far post and scored. This was Kay's first goal as a Gator. Then 20 minutes later, SF State sealed the win as
Andrea Carey (Fresno, California, San Joaquin Memorial)scored off a corner kick to increase the Gators' lead to 2-0.
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus)recorded her only save of the afternoon as she stopped the Lumberjacks' Arielle Kern's attempt from going into the net in the 39th minute. This was Jones' sixth shutout in goal for the Gators.
Humboldt State (1-8, 1-6 CCAA) was outshot by the Gators 12-7 including 8-1 in the first half. SF State also recorded 7 shot on goals compared to the Lumberjacks' one shot on goal attempt. The Gators also controlled the ball in their end of the field as they had 6 corner kicks to Humboldt State's three. Jennie Paugh had five saves in goal for the hosts.
SF State will continue its season long five-game road trip this Sunday morning at 11:30am in Rohnert Park for a CCAA game with the Sonoma State Seawolves, who defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 3-0 this afternoon in Rohnert Park
