SEASIDE, Calif.– With their 3-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road victory over the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters this afternoon, the SF State Gators move into first place in the CCAA North Division with Cal State Stanislaus losing 3-2 in overtime at Cal State East Bay. The Gators improve to 8-2-3 overall and 7-2-2 in the CCAA. SF State has not a lost a game in seven games, which the Gators have gone 5-0-2.
“We got on the board early today, and had two more goals called because of offsides' calls,” said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. “We executed very well today and it was a total team effort,” added Hyde. “I am very pleased with the way we prepared for this afternoon's game.”
Michelle Spinner (Bakersfield, California, Stockdale)connected on the game's first goal in the 10th minute of the first half off a cross from
Myriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park) to give the Gators an early 1-0 lead. This was Spinner's third goal of the season and proved to be the game-winner, which it is her second of the season.
The Gators continued their offensive onslaught as they outshot the Otters (2-11, 1-10 CCAA) 6-0 in the first half. SF State increased its lead to 2-0 with less than two minutes to go in the half as
Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra )connected on a pass from Spinner and dribbled it past the goalkeeper for her third goal of the season.
Early in the second half, senior Johnson scored off a cross from
Sara Ordaz (Lodi, California, Tokay) to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. This was Johnson's team high fourth goal of the season and Ordaz's first assist.
The Gators gave up their first goal in six games as Cal State Monterey Bay scored with less than a minute to go in the game when Shoshana Wangerin connected on a corner kick from Beth Ramsay to make the final score 3-1 SF State.
For the game, SF State outshot the Otters 11-3 including 7-1 in shot on goal attempts. The hosts did record more corner kicks then the Gators, 4-2.
Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus)kept her shutout streak alive as she was in goal for the Gators for the first 81 minutes. She now has not allowed a goal in 6.90 matches.
Allison Day (Fremont, California, Mission San Jose HS)played in goal for SF State for the final 9 minutes.
Graciela Holguin recorded three saves for the Otters in the first half while Andrea Davis had one saves in the second half for the hosts.
The two teams will face each other again this weekend this Sunday at 2pm for another CCAA match-up, this time at SF State's Cox Stadium.
