Lumberjacks Hold On To Defeat Gators, 73-70

Nefi Perdomo Had a Team High 22 Points for SF State on 7 of 14 Shooting Including 5 of 10 from Three's
ARCATA, Calif.---  The SF State Gators fought back from a 9-point deficit with four minutes to go, but the first place Humboldt State Lumberjacks (12-1, 9-1 CCAA) held on to defeat the Gators 73-70.  Nefi Perdomo (Oakland, California, Skyline ) and Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College)combined for 40 points for the Gators while Brian Morris had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Lumberjacks.

"I am extremely proud of the way our basketball team played tonight," said SF State Head Coach Paul Trevor.  "But we need to play with the big boys," added Trevor.  "You have to limit your breakdowns at crucial point of the game."

The Gators (8-6, 6-4 CCAA) took an early 12-2 lead in the first five minutes capped by a jumper by Nefi Perdomo.  They increased their lead to Perdomo's three with 5:48 to go in the half gave the visitors a 28-15 lead.  

Humboldt State went on a 15-7 run in the final minutes of the game to give the Gators a 35-30 lead heading into intermission.

The hosts continued their run in the second half as Scott Clark's three gave them their first lead of the game, 45-44, at the 11:51 mark of the game.  Randy Hunter's lay-up with just 6:36 on the clok increased the Lumberjack lead to 58-49.  

SF State did not give up as Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra) three with 1:44 to go, cut the Lumberjack lead to 67-65.  On the hosts' next posssions, Brandon Sperling made a lay-up to increase their lead back to 69-65, but Hoskins connected on a lay-up to cut the lead back to 69-67 with 36 seconds left on the clock.  

Ernie Spada connected on two free throws to increase their lead back to four (71-67), but the Gators' Perdomo hit a three with 11 seconds to cut the lead to just one (71-70), but Elliott Babcock-Krenk made both of his free throws to increase it back to 73-70 with 11 seconds to go.

SF State had one more chance, but the Gators attempt to tie the game fell short.

"We are right there." added the Gators' first-year head coach.  "As long as we keep get better, I expect great things to come from this team."

Humboldt State went 25-33 from the line while the Gators were just 7 of 11.  

Perdomo finished with 22 points while Hoskins had 18 points for the Gators.  "Marquel Hoskins and nefi Perdomo were big time for us this weekend," noted Trevor.

SF State will continue its four-game road trip this Friday, January 21 at 7:30pm for a CCAA game at Chico State.
