POMONA, Calif. – Despite a career-high 12 kills by
Katie Judd, the San Francisco State women's volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to a disappointing end on Sunday, falling to host Cal Poly Pomona in four sets (25-11, 22-25, 25-22, 28-26) at Darlene May Gymnasium.
The Gators were unable to overcome 28 attack errors and 10 errant serves, slipping to 9-6 on the season and 5-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Broncos completed the season sweep between the two schools, moving to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
In addition to Judd's total,
Megan Johnson surpassed the double-digit kill plateau with 11 put-aways of her own, while
Jazmine Williams launched nine non-returnables to go along with four block assists. SF State also received eight kills apiece from
Kelsie Brennan and
Charlotte Campion, while
Iris Tolenada posted her seventh double-double of the year with match highs of 44 assists and 20 digs.
The Gators owned a 57-52 advantage in kills, but hit just .187 for the match, while CPP finished with a .254 attack percentage and maintained a 10-6 edge in blocks.
The Broncos were paced by Diana Lake's match-best 13 kills, while Lauren Jones and Kristin McNeese added 10 apiece. SF State was also unable to solve the duo of Taylr Kreutziger and Jessica Doerner, who combined for 11 block assists.
CPP broke a 2-2 tie early in the opening set with five straight points, including a Doerner kill and a Kirsten Rutledge service ace, to build a 7-2 lead they would not relinquish. The hosts recorded a .423 hitting percentage for the frame, knocking down 12 kills in 26 attempts with just one error, while the Gators hit at a .031 clip.
SF State turned the tables in the second stanza, forging a pair of seven-point leads, including a 21-14 spread following a Brennan kill. The Broncos quickly responded with an 8-2 run, featuring three combined blocks by Doerner and Kreutziger, to cut the deficit to 23-22. The Gators escaped, however, as a CPP serve and subsequent attack went awry, knotting the match at one set apiece.
After intermission, SF State found itself in pursuit mode for most of the third frame, with the Broncos taking their largest lead at 16-10 following a block by Jones and Doerner. Two kills by Judd and Johnson highlighted a late 12-8 Gator run to narrow the gap to 24-22, but the rally was short-circuited after an SF State attack hit the net.
A frenzied fourth set soon unfolded as the two teams combined for 12 ties and six lead changes. A Johnson put-away and ensuing CPP attack error provided the Purple and Gold its biggest cushion of the frame at 15-10. However, three Kreutziger kills keyed a 10-4 surge to put the Broncos up 20-19. SF State tallied the next three points, including combined block by Williams and
Robyn Hall to go back in front 22-20. CPP fought itself off the ropes to tie the score on two occasions, but a kill by Hall put the Gators on the cusp of sending the match into a decisive fifth set at 25-24. An errant serve quickly sandbagged those plans, though, as the Broncos seized the moment with Kreutziger knocking down two kills to punctuate a clinching 4-1 run.
SF State returns home for six straight matches, beginning next weekend, when it battles Humboldt State (Oct. 7) and Sonoma State (Oct. 8) on successive nights. First serve for both contests is set for 7 p.m.
